Not what I was expecting Vegas to do with their cap space.

Ottawa gets a competant defender and a 3rd for a guy who underperformed in Ottawa. Not a bad deal, though I think there was upside in giving him another chance to bounce back.

Dadonov can't play center and is not a cheaper replacement for Smith who is reported to be on his way out. Interesting.

Dadonov went from 1LW to washed up in just one season. Perhaps he can turn it around in VGK, which would make this a great buy-low deal for the team. Still, is that really the best way for VGK to use all that cap space?

No retention? Is McCrimmon high?

Also: Dadonov doesn't replace Smith, a playmaking two-way winger who played PK1.

I'm really happy with this trade from the Sens.

Get off Dadonov's contract and pick up assets.

I'm going to try to break this down in the most comprehensive and most objective way possible.

Hockey side of the trade: Fair Deal

1. As a top 6 forward on the wrong side of 30, Evgeni Dadonov can still score goals in bunches.

2. However, he was never a good fit in Ottawa.

3. He could be a good fit in Vegas if he has the same success there as he did with Huberdeau and Barkov in Florida. That's a big if.

4. What Ottawa gets back in return is a veteran defenceman who can succeed when given the chance, like he did in the playoffs with Vegas.

5. Ottawa also gets back a 3rd round pick.

6. When I made posts about trading Dadonov to other teams, I had Ottawa receiving what San Jose got for Mike Hoffman basically.

7. The 3rd round pick cancels out the 4th and 5th round picks in the Hoffman trade.

8. Holden was traded for the equivalent of a 2nd round pick 3 years ago when he was a pending UFA.

9. Florida received a 7th round pick for taking on Hoffman while Vegas isn't receiving anything for taking on Dadonov.

10. Dadonov was a former 3rd round pick himself, so one could argue that Dadonov for a 3rd round pick straight up would be fair.

Money side of the trade: Big win for Ottawa

1. Vegas is taking on Dadonov's full cap hit of 5 million and Ottawa is not retaining any salary.

2. Vegas will need to pay Dadonov 5 million this season and 6.5 million next season.

3. Ottawa only needs to pay Holden 1.4 million before he becomes a UFA this season.

4. Ottawa can trade Holden anywhere while there are 10 teams to where you can't trade Dadonov.

5. Vegas has replaced most of Fleury's cap hit with Dadonov's.

6. Dadonov is now an obstacle to acquire Eichel.

I voted for the Ottawa Senators smile

Vegas "Revolving Door" Knights. Smith will be next to go, then they'll get Laine next year and trade Dadonov away.

Just when I thought Eichel was headed to Vegas...This team is still weak down the middle. Too weak to win it all.

When will Vegas learn that cup contenders aren't built by destroying the team's chemistry every offseason just to make lateral moves?

I really thought Eichel was going to Vegas. I would've bet big on it. Maybe something else changes.

The Sens get out of a pretty hideous contract, get a pick and a day trading asset. Not bad for them.
