This is pretty risky

He is a capable but has not carried a massive workload even with the Sabers. Plus considering Swayman is the backup things could get dicey

This poor man literally carried the sabres... yea... the sabres. Highly impressive year for him. I don't know what you mean by the lack of a workload.

After watching how goalies contracts have aged, both good and bad, I've essentially come to the conclusion that any goalie contract over 3 years is automatically bad.

For example: Gibson should have won back to back vezinas and has been completely mediocre the last 2 straight years and no where worth his contract.

Has ullmark been good? Sort of. He was alright on an awful Buffalo squad. Will he be good next year? Literally no one knows because goalies are voodoo.

For this money and term, that's an easy no

Hellebuyck has demolished expectations. And we don't have to go beyond Boston and Rask to know a great goalie worth his money. Even what Hank did the first handful of years probably compensated for the last two (in which he was still okay, just overpaid). Vasilievsky looking like he'll be worth every penny.

Its moreso that people don't look at expectations when signing goalies most of the time. Ullmark might have been Buffalos starter, but what does that really mean? He hasn't impressed beyond any expectations. This seems like a rough goalie contract to me, but there are good ones out there.

Vladar will be the backup, they want Swayman to get a full year in PRO

Have to think this means Raskb is calling it a career. He's been out till Jan/Feb and has said he only wants to play in Boston. 4yr commitment is significant to Ullmark.

For those saying Ullmark/Swayman, reports are they want Swayman to get a full workload in Providence. He also doesn't require waivers while Valdar does. Expect Ullmark and Vladar to be the tandem in Boston to start.

Well sounds like they traded Vladar to Cgy for a 3rd

37 games was the most he every played
Then you got Swayman behind him whose only played 10.

Ullmark is probs gonna need to play 55 games as Rask is not probs gonna be back if ever till February (injury recovery) and I dont see Swayman playing 41 games.

Its risky but could reap very good rewards

No idea what he's done to be worth this type of money except play minutes. He's fine, but I have no indications that he's even above average, which this deal heavily implies. Rask is one of the best handful of goalies in the league. The difference is going to be brutal. I think Boston will launch a rebuild within two years at this point, and this signing might well be the tipping point.

This is average price for a starting goalie in their prime.

Rask has been incredible but is nearing the end of his career.

I don't care if someone is "in their prime" or not. I care how many pucks they prevent from going into the net, compared to how many pucks I expect to go I ti the net.

This seems like a signal that Rask is gone...I wonder where he ends up. Maybe Colorado?

Same as everyone else. But someone being in their prime makes it more likely they'll stop more pucks than someone past their prime...

For an extreme example: Hasek and Roy are likely the best goalies of all time but I'll take any NHL goalie in their prime today over either of them in their 50s.

I'd rather take Hasek out of his prime than most goalies to ever be in their primes.

lol this was such a fraud signing

5 x 4 for a guy whose never played a majority of games in a season and never played a playoff game

jack campbell's agent is gonna use this as a comparable to get the same amount of money.

It's fun to come back and look at these signings/trades a couple of years later.

Makes you remember that most people on here really have no idea what they are talking about haha. Not meant to be a dig at you, by the way.
