Arizona didn't have much leverage. They are trying to tank and Kuemper on an expiring contract does nothing for them.

Sakic was probably trying to lowball the UFA goalies, failed and then had to make a trade because they were all gone.

Arizona had plenty of leverage in that they had two suitors (Edmonton and Colorado) and Colorado was desperate as they're a juggernaut contender who suddenly had no legit starter and essentially no other options (with the caveat that I still don't know what's up with Dallas)

Everyone knows Holland wasn't gonna give up a 1st and would need to dump Koskinen in the trade.

I think if Colorado gives up a 1st it's already a desperate overpay and they beat out all other offers. But then they add Timmins and a conditional 3rd on top that's just Sakic getting robbed.

How is kuemper an upgrade on grubauer? Grubauer was a Vezina finalist last year and is a great goalie...

Fleury won the Vezina and was given away for nothing. What I meant to say was, Kuemper is an upgrade on a dollar-for-dollar basis. Extending Grubauer would've been a cap nightmare when MacKinnon needs an extension. Kuemper probably would've won the Vezina (at least finished 2nd) 2 years ago had he not been injured in the second half. Grubauer is a fine Goalie, but Sakic knows what he's doing. This is good long term planning. Great teams don't necessarily need a $6M Goalie to win the Cup.

.

Kuemper | SAV% = 0.908 | GAA = 2.55 | Age = 31 | Cap = $3,500,000 x 1 years | Cost = 1st + 1st | Team = Colorado
P-Mrazek | SAV% = 0.924 | GAA = 2.05 | Age = 29 | Cap = $3,800,000 x 3 years | Cost = No Costs | Team = Toronto
Campbell | SAV% = 0.922 | GAA = 2.15 | Age = 27 | Cap = $1,600,000 x 3 years | Cost = 3rd + 3rd | Team = Toronto

Not feeling this trade boys ... and theoretical girls.

Making an AGM with this trade would had brought up so much hate.

Timmins was next to untouchable for fans, and then you add a 1st, for a UFA... 🙉

Colorado definitely panicked on this one. Still can't believe Grubauer walked.

Massive win for the Avalanche. Kuemper is better than Grubauer.

We'll see how this goes. Grubauer went from being overrated to underrated in the span of like a week. Say what you want about him, but he was a consistent, good starter for the last 5 seasons. Kuemper on the other hand is inconsistent. He seems to range from a fringe starter to an elite goalie without much in-between. So I guess we'll see which Kuemper shows up for the Avs

Even with the $1M retained, I still think Colorado's package highlights just how desperate they were to cover up losing Grubauer. At least they have legit goaltending going forward

This is a trade you make for Alex Nedeljkovic, not Darcy Kuemper.

... This is inexcusable for Colorado.

I voted for the Arizona Coyotes smile

So you’re saying that if Kuemper and Nedeljkovic were both available for the same price, you’d take Ned? I get that he’s a future asset while Kuemper is just a rental, but can Ned be a #1 goalie on a Stanley Cup team? Carolina didn’t think so, and Colorado probably didn’t either. If you want to know what this trade is about, all you have to do is look at the condition on the 3rd round draft pick. Usually the throw-in pick in a pending UFA trade is conditional on the player signing an extension, but Colorado doesn’t care where Kuemper goes next summer as long as they win now.

I agree that a pending UFA going into the last year of his contract usually doesn’t fetch a 1st round pick, but if Colorado makes this trade at the deadline, I don’t think it would be considered an overpayment. I’ve always thought it was strange that teams are willing to pay more to rent a player for a few months than they are for a full season. Other than getting himself into a situation where he had to make this trade, I think the biggest mistake Sakic made was not getting Arizona to retain more of Kuemper’s salary.

Looks like this trade paid off for Colorado. Turned into a win/win for both teams.

avs won but kuemper was only ok

yotes get 32nd in a weak draft and timmins missed another full season with an injury.

overall i'd say it's a fair trade.
