This is the thing about evaluating Monahan.

We don't really know if he has regressed because he needs a change of scenery

or

because he's an asset that's genuinely depreciating in value.

If he just needs a change of scenery, I would offer you Erik Brannstrom or Colin White and a 2nd.

If he's genuinely depreciating in value, I'd offer you something like what Calgary got for Sam Bennett.

I feel like you arent taking into account the effect the injury had on him, Monahan got injured in game 16 the season, sat out two games and came back while playing through it. Prior to the injury Monahan had 12 points in those 16 games for a 62 point pace all while shooting at a career low of 5.56% at the time. That's almost 1/3rd of his career average. After returning from the 2 game rest Monahan totaled 16 points in the remaining 36 games he played for a 39 point pace. His Shooting % did normalize a little more though at 12.5%

I get that its a pretty small sample save (I mean this whole season is a small sample size) but that's a massive drop off in production. That to me says the injury was a major cause to his lack of production

If Monahan was playing like he did between the years 2014 and 2019 ...

And

Ottawa was making the playoffs with some consistency ...

I would offer you something like what we gave up for Matt Duchene.

That's right.

Injuries can happen to any player when a trade needs to be made.

The key is to strike while the iron is hot smile

I should clarify, I dont entirely disagree with the package you put, I was disagreeing with your analysis.

Personally I would be asking for Grieg and a pair of 2nds, bit more than what Nashville paid you for 1 year of Turris

I will say that's not outrageous or extravagant.

However, I don't think Ottawa is the right team to be trading for Monahan.

A team that lost out on the Jack Eichel sweepstakes (Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers, etc) would be a better fit for Monahan IMO.

I'd like to know where our team is at least a month or two into the season before making any risky trades with high stakes.

There were rumors that the Ottawa would be in on Ryan Strome of the New York Rangers.

But if we're not going to be competitive, trading for Strome (or Monahan for that matter) would not make a whole lot of sense for Ottawa.

I don't want Pierre Dorion/Eugene Melnyk throwing away our progress we have made for the last 2 years because we decided to chase the next Matt Duchene.

I think the injuries have finally caught up with him. Ottawa shouldn't be giving up anything significant to acquire him because Norris is already better and Pinto probably will be by January.

If that's the case, he's genuinely depreciating in value then.
