The biggest loser here is the Vancouver Canucks, who still have to sign Quinn Hughes.

Zach Werenski will be the 3rd highest paid defenseman in the NHL next year. Let that sink in.

A week ago there were 4 D with an AAV of $9 million or more in the NHL. Now 4 have signed for $9 plus million in the last 5 days.

Yep and Werenski be the first LD making 9mill since Josi lul and hes even making more than Josi who took a pay cut for 2 extra years.

I swear if Rielly asks for that trade him immediately then go to Anaheim and trade for either Fowler or Lindholm

I'm petrified. Good thing Werenksi at least can use advanced stats and defensive game to boost his rep.

Hughes also has less bartering power as a black hole RFA, and coming off a really bad season.

But I think this brings a considerable rise to his price. I can't deny this will be for the worst in VAN.

Don't forget the Rangers, with Adam Fox due a new contract after this year.

Honestly I think this is an overpayment. Jones' contract was too, but in my opinion, Jones was much more effective in Columbus than Werenski and deserved more. Just using the Jones contract for a comparison, though. I mean it's nice to see Werenski locked up as a blue jacket for 6 more years, but that's a whole lot of money for someone who was constantly battling with injuries last season.

I'm a cbj fan who tries to avoid being bias but here's my take

- third highest amount of goals for dmen since he came into the league while playing for ....torts.

- buys 5 ufa years and has him expire when he's 30

- if this is the "columbus tax" I'm fine with it. Its 1.5-2M more than it should be but if it gets a young star to stay here and rep the city, ultimately its worth it.

I guess Werenski is better than Jones, so… pay him like he’s Victor Hedman in his prime?

Why did Jarmo do this

Yeah, this definitely seems to be a result of the Columbus tax, which is really unfortunate. In the end the extra $1.5 million probably doesn’t make much of a difference, but the fact that he’ll be the 3rd highest paid D in the league just seems bad.

It's an overpay, but frankly I get it. They have had Jones, Dubois, Panarin, Duchene, and Bob leave in the last few years. They have a 1st pairing young defender in his prime willing to sign to term. I think fair would have been 7.5 ish but I get why they did it.

I was hoping Detroit would go after him as a UFA, but if that was the ask I’m glad we won’t get the chance.

I would expect Fox to be third unless he takes a bridge deal, but Heiskanen and Makar didn't so
