Description
This could be the perfect opportunity to shed Trouba. I think he's a really good player, but when he was signed, he was assumed to be the #1 defensemen in all situations... Fox has dethroned him rather quickly, and now Lundkvist is in the wings to take up the 2nd power play unit, etc. Trouba is only going to fall further down. This can be our "only" chance. Hopefully Trouba sees this coming and considers it as an option for his NMC. He'll get #1 time with Dahlin over in BUF.

We sweeten the pot a bit and add Kakko for taking on Trouba. Colin Miller comes in as a temporary sub for Trouba, and the Miller's play together this year. We likely let him walk in the off season. Lundkvist then takes up the 2nd RHD, and hopefully Schneider takes up the 3rd RHD. This whole plan is contingent on these two defensemen being ready as soon as possible (although, the Schneider aspect can be bypassed by getting another rental next year, no big deal). This method kind of goes against "win now mode", but hopefully it won't be too big of a detour.

We also get Tokarski as a 3rd NHL goalie just in case. He can be a serviceable backup if Kinkaid falters (but after his Instagram wars with Puck Empire, I'm sure he's got a lot to prove : P)

BUF is kind of overflowing with centers at this point; they can choose to flip Strome to OTT or whomever. Seems there's a lot of interest in him. Could work out for them to maximize assets, either immediately or at the deadline.

Losing Kakko sheds a lot of the potential bonuses, and also welcomes Kreider back into the top 6 where he likely belongs. Yes, I know CapFriendly only lists him as a LW, but he plays RW plenty. I'm sure he will figure out how to hold his stick a little different to come back to the top 6.

Nick Ritchie probably doesn't happen, but more of a wishlist. Sub him in with Hunt if it's not possible to sign him. I've never seen the Hunt play, but everyone seems to be ranting and raving about this guy. I don't really know personally, not showing up on paper. But it'll be musical wingers on the bottom 6 with Blais, Reaves, McKegg, Rooney, Gauthier, and Hunt given the opponent, etc.

Perhaps most importantly, losing Trouba sets up Zibanejad and Fox for 9-10million dollar contracts pretty comfortably with Eichel in the picture. Most of the other trades going on doesn't have a good immediate fit, or would assume Fox takes a bridge deal. I pretty easily give both Zibanejad and Fox 8x9mil ASAP. This would allow that to happen very comfortably.

I'm not seeing any other options on the right side, both at the NHL or AHL level. I assume they are dumping Miller at some point by the deadline. Joker is a good 2nd or 3rd pairing RHD. Trouba isn't terrible, he's just overpaid by 2million. He's young enough to fit into the BUF timeline, and his cap hit won't be a problem there for the forseeable future.

Besides, your want is to get rid of an expensive player that doesn't want to play for you... Eichel. It's not like you are taking on dead cap here, he's gonna be your #1 in all situations (unless they put lefty Dahlin on the first PP)

why would u use kreider on the right and goodrow as a center? this doesnt work for a lot of reasons, mainly that the rangers wouldnt make that trade. its somehow both an overpay and a trade the sabres dont want at the same time.

I don't see Trouba waiving to Buffalo or waiving from NYR

This is interesting if you think past a knee-jerk reaction. Ultimately, with Buffalo $30M over the cap pre-Eichel salary shed, I don't think taking on Trouba is a big deal. He'd instantly be a top pair defenseman for them. I just think the concept of taking on Skinner and JT contracts are too tough of a taste to go through with. Not to mention the NMC, which Trouba would never waive. Definitely an interesting thought, and not as crazy as I'm sure people will say!

I'm confused, why wouldn't you put Kreider on the right and Goodrow at center? They both have history playing these positions, and the Rangers need them to play these positions, especially given the deal if they want Eichel. Or do you want to have Kreider as the 3rd line LW, and Goodrow as the 4th line LW, and much lesser players playing where they are on this list? Goodrow has good faceoff stats on SJS... and considering how bad NYR is at the dot, fairly great

Thank you. My attempted justification for Trouba waiving is Fox pushing him off the #1 positions, and Lundkvist potentially taking him off the #2 power play as well. Maybe NYR can use this for a reason that his playing time will be severely limited. Maybe even threaten a buyout in a few years.

Trouba isn't nearly as bad as anyone says... just, Adam Fox was much better than anyone thought. He's overpaid by 1 or 2 million dollars. Other than that, he's very good

The Sabres are tanking, Trouba isnt a long term solution nor will he even want to be in Buffalo

Only Shibbal18 would find a problem with this trade.
It is a HUGE return.
Dahlin and Trouba for the next five years.
Power and Jokiharju for the next 8 or more
Samuelsson and Laaksonen for the next 11 years
Chytil, Cozens, Mittelstadt the top 3 centers.
Kakko, Quinn, Thompson at RW
Skinner, Olofsson, Girgensons at LW
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen or Portillo or Levi in net
Then flip Strome for additional assets.
This trade gives Buffalo too much and they would be fools to turn it down.
