Good deal for Yzerman. He gets a new young 4C he drafted in Tampa after LGD left.

Detroit gets some center depth and Tampa gets a pick for a guy they really didn't need. Fair deal

Yzerman is going to turn Stephens into something special.

I can feel it.

All at the cost of a 6th round pick.

I really liked Stephens in the playoffs during Tampa’s first cup run. 8 points in 4 AHL games last year too. He’s going to be a nice depth piece that Yzerman might get more out of. Solid deal Stevie!

Total steal. Stephens will definitely play, natural centre, will be slot right in to the Wings bottom-6.

I like this trade a lot for Detroit and especially for Mitchell Stephens since he will have a much better opportunity there. Stephens was probably never going to become an NHL regular in Tampa, but I think Yzerman will make the most out of this trade. Red wings win imo.

We should have just played Stephens and never signed bellemare. Better than losing him on waivers I guess

It’s a great deal for Detroit, but it’s smart by Tampa too. ABB, Colton, Joseph, Maroon, PEB, and Perry have secured the spots in our bottom-six and I’m sure one if not both of Raddysh and Katchouk will be kept on the active roster so they don’t have to go through waivers. Obviously we’re not using all three extra roster spots on forwards. Stephens was probably going to be the one who didn’t fit anywhere but lots of teams were probably interested enough to grab him off waivers. Instead of losing him for nothing, we got an asset for it. We had zero leverage here, so it’s was never going to be completely fair compensation, but it’s better than nothing. Meanwhile, Detroit probably would have lost out had he gone to waivers. They basically paid a 6th for someone who is at worst a 4C and could easily blossom into an aggressive forechecking 3C. The odds of a 6th turning into something better than that are slim, so it’s a win for them.

I said it was a fair deal because it’s a win/win, but I do think Detroit was the bigger winner.

Good trade, Mitch can compete for 4C with Chase. Either way, he’s prob an improvement over Helm and can help in GR if he doesn’t make it

Stevie confirmed in his press conference yesterday that the only position that needed filling was another bottom 6 center, and now he’s got it at a low price. Some people were wondering how Yzerman was going to get center depth after waiting until the later rounds to pick some in the draft, but after acquiring Suter and Stephens, things look set in terms of depth.

Pearson is getting shoved down the depth chart pretty hard, with Larkin, Suter, Ras, Veleno and now Stephens as his main competition it’ll be a tough journey to a roster spot.

It's a paltry return, and TBL has plenty of forward spots up for grabs. I guess they have full confidence that ABB, Raddysh, and Katchouk can step in right away?
