Deadline Deal for Giroux & Schenn - Thoughts?

Description
Just curious what peoples thoughts are - I don't actually think Giroux is going anywhere at all.

But in this trade Giroux and Schenn give The Canadiens a 1C and a top 6 forward, both signed long term who are good for 60-70 and 55-65 points respectively. It all fits under the cap at deadline too as it's calculated daily and even with no cap movement next season they'd still have plently of cap to re-sign Radulov (call it $7m), Beaulieu ($2.5m) and the rest of the bottom end forwards / D. I also presume Sergachev will be in the NHL.

Then when Plekanec is done the year after there's money for Price to re-sign.

Flyers get two decent forwards (though a downgrade but with potential still) who are nearer to the age of the new developing core / prospects. The two first might be a bit steep but they Flyers are giving up two better point producers to the 'win now' mentality Canadiens and I don't see 1 first being enough to balance things.

Desharnais is a cap dump.

I really like it. I'm just wishing there was a way to tell if it was cap compliant? And your plan for next year is that Markov is not resigned, or resigns for a lot less?

Interesting move, but it feels like you're giving up a lot. I wonder what the trade would look like if you left Schenn out and just acquired Giroux. Maybe Galchenyuk and Desharnais with a first and a third?

Markov is gone, which I presumed would be the case with Sergachev getting rave reviews but I could be wrong!

It should all be cap compliant, Giroux and Schenn have a cap hit of $3,424,444 left this season when calculated daily. The players Motreal give up have a combined cap left this season of $2,568,333. Montreal currently have $3,593,383 of banked cap space the difference would come out of. They should have $4.1m cap in the bank at deadline too (and all the player numbers would have gone down slightly) saving the Canadiens a little more cap to make maybe one more deal with.

True, there reason I added Schenn for Gallagher (essentially) is it's another upgrade for the Canadiens going 'all in'. It's a lot to give up but getting two firsts back is quite a hefty return considering Galchenyuk and Gallagher are both pretty good players with plenty of upside still who'd be part of the Flyers core for a long while (you'd hope).

Do the Habs or any team really want to trade for Giroux at age 29 and have five full years at 8.25m a year? Cap looks good for this year but he future years? You could argue that Giroux has peaked and is likely to decline in production in future years.

I think the 'decline' argument is a little bit too harsh on Giroux. Is he likely to score 93 points again? No. But he's still a good player and absolutely a 1C. Almost all the Flyers forwards have been inconsistent this year and he's still on course for almost 60 points despite the Flyers having scored 11 goals in 8 games (off the top of my head). He also had 38 points in 44 games before the whole team fell off a cliff. He's coming off hip surgery but is still a PP beast and good on faceoffs. I don't think his cap will drastically become a hindrance over the next few years but he might play like more of a $6.5m guy than and $8m. That difference is the cost of a 'win now' approach though in my opinion.

As a Flyers fan as much I'd hate to give up those two that isn't completely bad package. The only thing I would trade/swap out is one of the 1st Rd. Picks. Would you be interested in giving up a prospect like Juulsen instead of the 2019 1st Rounder? just because those picks likely fall outside the top 25 and they might want an established prospect that they have film on.

Basically I bet you could get the Flyers to bite if you did Galchenyuk, Juulsen, and a 1st for Giroux and a 3rd. At least me anyway haha. Good job though overall and well thought out. If you're adding Schenn then yeah I understand the cap going back will have to be a lot more.

Interesting idea. Im not put off in value, but the cap going back the other way is not enough. Habs have to include Plekanec instead of Desharnais for this to work. Even if we don't resign Markov, we have to Price, Radulov and Pacioretty within a couple years.........

If Philly retains a bit of Giroux's salary then I think it could work.

For the Flyers adding Plekanec would be fine, but it makes the Canadiens weaker now for no real reason. The moves all fit under the cap as it is and leave money to re-sign players like Radulov, Beaulieu and Price down the line.
