My first reaction to this trade was, "Man if we did this, our defense would have one top 4 D and 5 bottom pairing D", then I realized we are only one injury away from being in the same situation!

I care about winning and I don't think you can win with a bunch of lightweight Dmen. That's why I don't want Ty Smith. Perhaps the second round pick could be upgraded to a first. Hughes is fun to watch but isn't nearly as good as Makar. Mark my words, he will get seriously injured at some point and then what have you got for your $8M ? Also trades have to work for both parties.

Just be thankful you have Quinn Hughes. Jared Spurgeon is 5'9" and barely 170 pounds, yet has played 707 games in 11 seasons, three of which were shortened.

Counter points to that:
1. 0 Playoffs series with Spurgeon as a top pair RD.
2. 1 season without missing games due to injury. He misses about 8 games a year on average.
3. A career -14 in the Playoffs. +1 (once) is a career high.

Plainly put, small d-men don't work in the Playoffs. It's one of the reasons teams pay so much for the big bottom-6 grinders. They just beat on them until they wear down and make mistakes.

It's not a matter of value, but of roster structure. We can't possibly afford to pay Quinn Hughes the contract he's going to demand when we already have Hamilton, Luke Hughes, and Ty Smith in the organization; we also don't need a top-pairing LHD-when we already have Ty Smith (and Luke Hughes as a prospect). Even worse, losing Sharangovich without replacement would leave us with all of two sure top-9 wingers. Even if the value were good - which I don't think it is, but that's not the main point here - this works for the Canucks organization, but it doesn't work for the Devils.
