Signing the Rfas not much cap space now is Copp staying a Jet

Description
Adding the almost $10 million combined in Schmidt and Dillon eliminated any wiggle room the Jets had to sign their RFAs and do anything else.
So here I signed Pionk to the Morrissey deal, signed Copp to a B.Tanev/Goodrow type contract, bridged Stanley for a million, sent Beaulieu to the minors for a bit of cap relief and kept Niku as a cheap 7th dman but in reality it's likely the Jets keep Beaulieu up and demote Niku, if he's claimed so be it. I put Little on LTIR as that's where he'll be unfortunately, so with that done and no 13th/14th forwards there's only $851K in cap space which seems an unlikely way for the Jets to operate this season, maybe they grind a million off of Pionk's deal and a few hundred thousand off of Copp's which would afford them one spare body at league minimum and a bit more cap space or two league minimum forwards and the $851K in space but again that's with Bealieau down to the AHL which seems unlikely considering how the Jets and Maurice roll, Stanley could be a tad bit cheaper too but that won't make much difference really.

Maybe Pionk signs a short term deal for a cheaper AAV then we think, guess it's possible, don't think that's the best move to make but guess it's possible, maybe Pionk isn't going to be getting as much $$/term as we think he is either, could be around a $4M×4 deal similar to D.Toews got, that'd help from a cap perspective but I'd rather see Pionk signed long term, he's the Jets best dman and RHD are hard to find.

Will be interesting to see who gets what or if Copp or possibly even DeMelo are on there way out, anyway as what's shown here the Jets cap situation is pretty tight to get their RFAs signed since the two trades.

Hate to say but I see Pionk going to arbitration. Maybe gets something like 1x4.25?
It’s tight. I’d be selling high on Copp.

I think the jets give Copp anything less that 4.5M and move demelo if they have to. Pionk contract looks good.

I think they both file ahead of this afternoon's deadline because at the very least it keeps their options open. That said, I think Pionk signs before the arbitration hearing (for the Morrissey deal like OP mentioned) while for Copp it will be term or trade before the arbitration.

Filing for arbitration is a formality at this point. It would be idiotic from a negotiation standpoint not to file for arbitration. I guarantee both do and sign a deal before the arb date, Copp is the one I could see actually going to arb. I think pionk likely gets close to what Morrissey got, ideally I’d like him at 8 x 5.75 million but I know that’s an underpayment.

Copp should get around 3.75 for 5 years, or be traded. Can’t let him go to arb and walk as a FA next year.

I believe Copp's preferences are: 1. term with the Jets, 2. trade (sign term elsewhere) and 3. one year contract. Probably the same for the Jets.

I think Copp should actually want term (here or elsewhere) because he just had a career year. As it stands, there is no clear path for him to get significant 2nd line minutes this season so if he ends up with a 1yr deal then when he goes to market the chances are that his stats may be worse than this past season.

Totally agree. I think term is best for both sides. Issue is who copps agent is, tries to get all of his clients overpaid a lot to make the most $ he can. That’s the only issue I see is them asking for way too much. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were trying to use hyman as a comparable in terms of style of play and versatility. Max id give Copp is 5 years 4 million per year.

I agree that this is going to be a tough one. I am going to take a wild guess and say it will end up being a trade and we won't hear about it until the day it happens because both Chevy and Overhardt know how to keep things quiet (Trouba deal) and all of the insiders are at the cottage.

Agreed, likely will be very very quiet and then boom, he’s gone. I wish they could get Bertuzzi from Detroit in a Copp trade.

He will, I think it’s just more about having the roster flexibility. Jets usually never go into the season without extra bodies or cap space. Running a 21 man roster probably would scare Chevy.

This lineup heading into the playoffs would be great but I don't see the Jets running this tight to the upper limit of the cap during the regular season. Maybe old man Wheeler needs a hip operation or replacement and be ready for the playoffs?smile I am hoping Pionk and Stanley sign to those contracts in this post but I can't see Copp.

I could see Copp getting 4 million for 5 years. Pionk would be great at 6 million. Like you said, maybe wheeler has been having some major hip pain and needs surgery. Idk he’s pretty old and probably could use an operation, maybe one with precise recovery time that has him returning for playoffs.

Little is on LTIR in this post and there's no cap space for any spare forwards.
