Statement about Quinn Hughes being unable to become good defensively: Statement from: https://www.capfriendly.com/users/CMcAvoy73. I am acting like that. I don’t think he can get better. He would have to take a completely different approach to hockey, and totally abandon what got him to the NHL to get better in my opinion.

He can be an awesome PP guy for a long time, but on a good team he should be a 3rd pair guy playing sheltered minutes at 5 on 5

What do you think of this statement?
Is it true?
Is it said because if jealousy?
Do you think that Hughes is “unable to get better”?

And if you think the vancouver canucks have a better forward group than the leafs, i dont know what to tell you. Vancouver is nowhere near as good as the leafs at any position, and the only way vancouver makes the playoffs is because they are in a laughably terrible division, one at which they are a bottom 3 team in.

Wow, just wow

That's BS if you ask me. He's probably never going to be a big defensive name but at some point, he will be decent in his own end. A 3rd pair guy? Come on. He has lots of room for improvement at 21 years-old.

If Hughes is incapable of being a top pair defenseman, then so are the likes of Erik Karlsson, P.K. Subban, Mike Green, et. al.

He'll never be a top two-way guy in the vein of Hedman, Doughty, Weber, etc., but in today's NHL, that's not necessarily a bad thing. As long as they bring in complementary players to compensate, he'll be fine on the top pairing.

My thoughts exactly. He will never be a superstar defensively but there’s no reason that he can’t become a reliable two way guy…

Yes. He won’t be superstar defensively because that’s not who he is. He is an offensive defenceman but there’s no reason that he can’t become responsible in his own zone. CMcAvoy73 is always bashing Quinn Hughes for no reason and none of his points are valid. On a previous post, he compared Hughes with Mike Reilly and insists that Hughes belongs on the third pair…

I find this funny because Mike Reilly was beyond useless until the arrival of Artem Zub, who literally rescued Reilly's troubled career.

The only point I can back in comparison is that both of these individuals need to be balanced by the right D pairing.

But really, how can anyone be so foolish to assume the career path of a 21 year old. I can't say two doubtful words about DeBrusk or his trade value - which is a far more convincing case of a troubled career - without being piled on.

Still, Hughes is an offensive defenseman, and although he needs to do better defensively, it will never be his specialty. Not improving from this season is a bold and extreme statement and whoever made that comment has a hole to dig out of.

Plus, Hughes did show signs of being a decent defensive presence in his 1st year with the team, it was just last year in which he struggled in his own end. You just can't write off a player (especially one of Hughes' caliber) after a season that was so unique and unprecedented anyways!

Exactly. I don’t know what kind of grudge CMcAvoy73 has against Hughes but he seems to be in denial every time a person mentions Hughes’ skill. To say a player can’t grow at the age of 21 is foolish. He should easily be able to grow into a reliable two way presence with great offensive abilities.

LMAO we should save this statement just in case it turns into another "Burrows, do we really need him" type deal (which is quite likely)!

You can teach defense, you can’t teach offence

Last year was a write off. Nothing worked. Covid, brutal travel, lack of depth. Hughes I remember played over 4 mins of an OT vs Montreal.

Kid’s stamina is unbelievable.

Yeah he had a huge workload. Hopefully OEL can bounce back and take some of that workload off him.

One can only hope. Myers was decent last year, if he can improve defensively and take less penalties, he would be a solid player in our lineup.

Man the stats are gonna be interesting. I really hope it doesn’t hurt Demko’s save percentage and GAA. At the same time, can’t wait for big Bo to pull of a 30 goal 80 point season.
