I'm glad someone did the islanders side of it so I can see it. I did the Detroit one.

laugh laugh Detroit's not retaining $3,750,000 x 2 on Vladimir Tarasenko for 2 cap dumps and a late 1st round pick. Need to offer us far better then this.

    Doubtful on Detroit side.

It equates to 7.5M of cap from Tarasenko plus two additional cap dumps with no roster spot for them. This would be considered dead cap weight completely and no shot of LTIR.

Hickey and Komarov are not dead weight. Komarov is a good 3rd line winger or 4th line center/winger. Hickey is a 6th/7th defenseman that, in my opinion, could be the wings 2LHD, overtaking Staal in your depth chart.

Probably could get more but it's not awful, gotta remember the depth of this draft, a first is worth more this year than last I feel

With the depth of this draft, it's not awful

Hickey and Komarov are dead weight, Yzerman already added a forward after his press conference where he said he wasn’t adding to the blue line and adding one forward. Hickey has played a grand total of 5 nhl games the past two seasons, I wish him well based on what he’s going through but he’s dead weight to Detroit. If they’re useful to you then pawn them off on someone else. You still need to factor 7.5M cap in regards to taking a retained spot (one of which is going to Panik for 2 years) so we’d have one retain slot for two years. Let’s also look at deadcap, who is the most recent comp? Marleau, 6.25M AAV and 3.8M cash this is more than both (especially cash).

The 1st is what it would cost for Detroit to take Komarov and Hickey off your books. They are both pure cap dumps to us, we have no roster spots open for them and they would have to be buried in Grand Rapids.

Retaining 7.5 millions over two years on Tarasenko would be very expensive. We already have one of the retention slots taken with Pánik the next two years and we have 6 players on expiring contracts that we may want to trade at the deadline and we need the remaining two retention slots ourselves. I would not retain for two years unless I was offered two 1sts.

Detroit declines unless the return is three 1st round picks.

The limitation on the number of concurrent retentions that are allowed is the limiting factor here.

With one of the three slots already taken and with us having 6 expiring contracts that we may have to trade we don't want to give away one of the remaining two slots unless it's for a massive overpayment.

You drastically undervalue first round picks. Three first round picks is roughly the price for Eichel, I don’t think it’d cost Eichel to get rid of two NHLers on contracts which they are overplayed by ~1million dollars.

A late first round pick is better than no first round pick. Isles just got Aatu Raty with the 52nd pick. Salary retention and two players who will play on the majors this year on expiring contracts that the Wings can also flip at the deadline for more picks? And the 1st round pick? Sure, Yzerman would do that.

You're totally missing the point here!

There's a limit to how many players a team is allowed to retain salary on, no more than three at any one time.

Detroit have already used one for both this upcoming season and the next one.

If we were to retain on Tarasenko for two years that would mean that we only would have one more retention slot available both next season and the one after.

Detroit have 6 veteran players on expiring contracts! Several of these, 3 or four of them, will have to be traded at the deadline.

We need the ability to retain salary on our own players in order to make those deadline deals!

It would seriously hinder our ability to trade players at the deadline if we give away half the retention slots we have both for this coming season and the next one!

It is the scarcity of retention slots that drives the price up in this case.

Detroit can NOT destroy their ability to trade their own players in order to please the Islanders.

The price for using one retention slot for two years is so high because we only have two and we have a need for them ourselves.

The $$ have absolutely no bearing at all on the price in this case, it is utterly irrelevant.
