Thinking about centers

Description
Not the centers you’d expect. But more about where does Sturm fit? He’s a UFA after this year and I don’t think he’s critical to the future unless the team thinks he can be the 3C. If not, it might be worth it to try and dangle him to get a younger guy that could possibly fill that gap in a couple years.

I also think this is part of the reason for not making a real splash on a C is that it blocks out either Sturm or Rossi. I used Strome as an example given it’s a pretty reasonable swap IMO.

So. Is Sturm the 3C of the next couple years or will he end up walking?

I’d do a Kadri/Rask swap but I know that doesn’t make sense at all for COL. The idea here is thinking about why the Wild haven’t made a move for a C that isn’t Eichel. Strome fits on the surface but that would shut Sturm out of a shot at 3C.

Longer term thought here.

Wild only need one season of a 2C before Rossi steps in

I’m in that boat as well, but I’m thinking about down lineup impacts. Wild fans love Sturm so it’s directed toward that.

With the centres on the team today, after EEK, I'd say Sturm is just as good as the rest: Hartman, Gaudreau, Bjugstad. I though his best play was when he was at C vs wing so I'd like to think he stays there and could be that 3C after Rossi/EEK in the future. Another reason to keep him there is his extension should be pretty cheap if they were to sign him for a 3 year bridge at a low cost to get past the deadcap issues?

Thing with Sturm is that he’s UFA after this year. If he’s a 3C, he’s getting paid.

I don't think they made a splash for a center is because none would sign in MN.

The team doesn't look good right now, just in the last 12 months:
1. dumped Staal to get around his NTC.
2. Treated Parise badly and publicly.
3. Buyout Parise (understandable) and Suter (wtf). Really messing up the longterm cap.
4. No deals for Kaprizov or Fiala,
5. Bonino and Cole (GMBG wanted both of them back)both bolted for other teams for similar money.
6. Trade Menell because he made the GM mad.
7. The mess that the Cities are/have been.
8. Just the way the GM talks. Good teams talk about winning, Playoffs, going after a Cup; bad teams talk about building character. BG has said much more about building character a lot more than about building a winning team.

Players talk. Agents talk. I'm really curious to know what they are saying about the Wild organization this offseason.

I'd be surprised if he gets more than 2.5/year for 2 or 3 years. Unless he has an amazing year which is a good problem to have.

Sturm is a UFA after this year. He's currently on his bridge deal. If he's a legit 3C then you're looking at a $3m/yr deal on his next contract.

To paraphrase @wabit, centers get paid. They always do.

Guess we'll just have to disagree on his value. I see him still on an "ELC type contract" since he was a college ufa signee and will be on a bridge deal up to 2.5ish/year for 2/3 years. He's only played 67 nhl games.

His ELC was a $4m cap hit. He's actually on his pro 3rd contract now. It'll be pay him his worth or he walks for his next contract type of thing is my guess. It'll probably be his one chance to make any real money as a pro hockey player.
