Monahan

Description
Wanted to here Bruins fans opinions on this. Personally I think Monahan could fit well in Boston as he would play a much less relied upon role as a 2C and would probably build similar chemistry with Hall that he had with Gaudreau, and Smith is definitely an improvement on pretty much every RW he's played with but Lindholm.

Obviously Calgary would never do a trade like this without a deal lined up for Eichel or in a 3-way that sends the above package to Buffalo.

I mostly just want to here Boston fans thoughts, do you think you need another top 6 center going into this year? If not why? If so what realistic options are there and is this a package you would be willing to pay for one of Monahan's caliber?

I do it. Would like if Monahan was signed a bit longer, but 2yrs fits the Bruins current cup window. Slight concern that his P/GP has dropped for 2 years in a row, but he's only 26yr old and it could have just bad a down year last year (his previous year wasn't far off his career average). Putting him with Hall/Smith could help him bounce back, but at worst he's around a 25G/60P guy.

Last year I get but Monahan screwed up his hip pretty early this season and never recovered until the surgery at the end of the year. Prior to the injury Monahan was pacing 63 points despite having a career low S% of ~5.5% at the time, post injury he paced around 38 points. Thats a pretty massive drop off that can clearly show the injury was a .ajor factor

Many players have also gotten the hip surgery he goand returned to form just fine after

I think it’s a bit much given that monahan just had a couple down years. That said, if this is the price, i would still do it. Overpaying a smidge is far better than going into the season with what the bruins actually have.

Not a fan of a trade for any 2C Monahan included. Just putting lipstick on a pig. Look at the defense which because of the contracts and no top D prospects on the horizon is pretty well l locked in for the next three years. On a legitimate Cup contending team 4 of the top 6 would be 3rd pairing D. That's why Boston is not a legitimate Cup contender. Throw a first ++ for a 2C and then you have to throw another first ++ for a top defenseman IF one comes on the market. Don't forget about the lack of cap room on top of that making those trades really hard to execute. After signing Carlo DS had 26M in cap space. He spent 25M on 4 F, 2 D and 1 G and still managed to come out of that with no 2C or top 2D which were his biggest needs. Was really excited heading into free agency but now the charade has to stop. Let Studnicka have a legitimate 2C opportunity and move forward from there.

Appreciate the feedback, I get what you mean about the defense and it could be sketchy for sure, I will say that statistically Mike Reilly has been pretty good in recent years though. As a Flames fan I 100% understand where you are coming from in terms of not actually fixing team needs with the cap space you have going into an offseason. We did that for years. Only issue is management definitely doesn't see it the same way as you here, they likely think that they are still competitors with the current roster and that will probably be why this trade could never happen
