But why would the Canes want Trouba? and why would a guy that made such a fuss to land in NY waive to CAR?

Could say they want a top 4 RHD after Hamilton dipped. Trouba simply wanted out of Canada. He never mentioned New York or Detroit even as a landing spot.

Eichel trade is nowhere close. More likely to trade him 1 for 1 for Zegras, Turcotte, or Krebs than take that mess of B pieces.

Gotta love the ridiculousness of sending the 1sts that are likely to be worse too. Maybe think about it next time.

Issue with this is that Carolina have had a very... confusing summer to casuals. Those who know that the Canes organization is based on numbers and mathematics understand why most of these moves were made. That said, Trouba's underlying numbers are... not good.

Bears are better and there's still that hope he can become a top 4 D man, and he would be at FAR less a cap hit.

At this point, moving Gardiner makes no difference. He needs back surgery, and he's an LTIR candidate. He's got no value whatsoever to anyone, he's not a dump, he's not got positive value, he's got nothing. The last time Carolina moved a 1st round pick to leave themselves without one in the first round... I believe was 2011. They're VERY unlikely to move a 1st if they only have one, since their ability to draft is probably the best in the NHL at this moment in time.

If Carolina wasn't comfortable paying Hamilton more than 6.2M, they wouldn't want to pay a worse defensemen in Trouba for 8M

Exactly this. Carolina isn’t bailing the Rangers out of a bad contract for good assets. Trouba is 2 million overpaid.

Pass on Trouba from this Canes fan.

No thanks. Trouba is substantially overpaid and the canes don’t want him at 8m for 5 more years. Bear is a good, team controlled player and Gardiner could just be bought out or just traded separately with a pick to another team if they wanted to move him bad enough.

If they weren’t willing to pay for Hamilton I don’t see how this makes sense.

Yep, 2011. It was the trade with the pens for J Staal. Although we paid a steep price with doumilin and a first it has worked out great.

Dumo was a big part of that D core though, and Letang had injury issues....
