Its a numbers game. In order for the Jets to sign both Copp and Pionk without dealing others, one needs to be on a short term deal and I suspect the Jets want to lock up their best RHD long term. It is unlikely that Copp takes a 2yr deal as he is unlikely to improve on his career year when there is no path to the 2nd line this year. Unless the Jets can replace a ~$1.5-2.0 million dollar contract with a league minimum deal, there won't be enough space to sign Copp to a long-term deal.

Too much for Winnipeg to give up for an underperforming rental. Copp would be better spent on a young roster player that is cheap and has term.

Would be kind of a loss leader for a hope to catch lightning in a bottle with domi. The thought is copp probably working his way closer to home in Michigan, something similar to roslovic with a better resume. Jets would love to keep him riding shotgun with Lowry, but like @Mr-Canoehead said a complete numbers game as far as getting everybody else paid. Niku just a change of scenery, window probably closed for limited opportunity in Winnipeg and 3rd rounder for the retained money.
