The fit seems too good to not do

Description
I've seen a lot of Dunn trades. I don't hate them. I like the route below because we have more options. LVK just stabbed the face of their franchise in the back...so tell me that they're not all in... They are. Vegas NEEDS a scoring center. I don't know why they got ride of Glass, but they did. Nolan Patrick is injury riddled and 13 seconds away from the bust moniker. AKA, he's not the answer.

IF this team turns out to be a contender...why couldn't we use that 1st to get Lindholm?

I agree with some that we need a top 6 forward. I signed Tatar to a 1 year deal. I don't love Tatar, but he's got benefits to his game. If Kane gets hurt or something...it's just 1 year and can be dealt at the TDL. This will also help progress guys like Kurashev and Nylander slowly vs tossing them into the fire.

This team also has more cap space than it appears. It has both Connolly and DeHaan, It has 5 forward lines and a 7th Dman. They have the cap space.

CHI
  1. 2022 1st round pick (VGK)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Vegas needs
A.) A Center
B.) A Scoring Center - It was a glaring problem in the MIN series and having the 22nd best PP unit sucks.
C.) Vegas has literally zero cap space.

So, if you're going for it all...and you are because you just stabbed MAF in the back...then there is literally only 1 option out there (that I can think of) that can meet the needs.

*2022 1st is lottery protected
*2023 3rd is dependent on Playoff success. Can bump to a 2nd.
VGK
  1. Shaw, Andrew
  2. Strome, Dylan
Additional Details:
Occurs on Day 2 of the season. Essentially means Strome's cap is neutralized by Shaw's LTIR AND Vegas is accruing $900k in LTIR throughout the season to use if they want to make a TDL move.

I'm semi confused here...If Vegas were to take Shaw/Strome, and then put Shaw on LTIR, they'd be at $84.537 mil cap-wise. Plus, that's without signing Nolan Patrick.

It's after Day 1 of the season. So every team needs to be cap compliant on Day 1. From the Vegas side...neither Strome nor Shaw will go toward the Day 1 compliance because the trade won't happen until after the season starts. Once the season starts, then the Hawks (or any team) can send Shaw to LTIR and accrue an "LTIR bucket." While that bucket accrues at a $3.9M pace...Strome will account for $3M out of that $3.9M. So Vegas is actually accruing MORE cap space as the year goes on. At the TDL they will have accrued enough cap space to fit roughly another $2M player. (just an estimate, I didn't do the full math)

More ltir myths. Shaw’s ltir accounts for Shaw’s cap hit. Every team needs to be cap compliant all year. Day 2 is no different than day 1. Teams can set the ACSL with a player on ltir.

LTIR is 100% treated differently over the summer than during the season. MANY GM's have outwardly spoken about this. When you say "Compliant"...this is compliant.

Shaw’s cap hit would put them over the cap now. So this doesn’t work.

Offseason is slightly different. No ACSL to set and adds on top of the offseason overage. Day 1 - day 2 no difference.

This just shows you are a bit confused. When a team recurves a player on ltir that team needs to set it’s own ACSL from scratch. A team can not accrue cap space while operating over the ACSL (using relief).

Shaw does nothing to help Vegas afford strome. Will only hurt them at TDL by not allowing them to accrue space and to acquire players. When using ltir relief players full yearly cap hit counts against the team.

Cap hit is calculated daily and not just one day of the season. There is a simplified faq here on this site you can use to learn the basics.

You're a Leafs fan, so the best example I can give is Nathan Horton. Link below to his official transactions. Why do you think he was LTIR'd on SPECIFICALLY Oct 4th 2017 and Oct 1st 2019, BUT not in 2018? He hadn't played since 2014, BUT there are reasons why he was and wasn't LTIR'd in different seasons. What do you think those reasons are?

100% agreed on daily cap hit. LTIR is different during the season vs in the Summer. Seabs will be LTIRd in the summer.

Here's a guide to learn from

Seabrook is gone. Doing it day 2 of the season still puts them over the cap.

It doesn’t save them anything.

I'm confused as to what you're talking about. Seabs was traded to TBL. Are you talking about Vegas or the Hawks?

Once the Hawks are cap compliant WITH Shaw NOT on LTIR...Then the roster is set. Then the season starts and LTIR has a different set of rules. Shaw can THEN be sent to LTIR and it gets treated differently.

Shaw has officially retired, but there's a very specific reason why he's NOT currently on LTIR. And he's 100% not on LTIR...he's just on IR.

The solution to our Ld problems just can't be throwimg kalynuk/stillman/jones/beaudan in and seeing what sticks. I'm cool with leaving one of the 3 LD spots open for those guys, but another vet needs to be brought in if we want to contend. The most logical solution is to roll with the D you have above to start the season, and bring someone in mid way. More Ld will be available for trade once teams realize this isn't their year. Make that Strome trade with vegas and then flip the vegas pick later for a Ld, at least. If we're going to contend I want to do it the right way, not just lose in the first round for the next 2-3 years then rebuild again (like what happened in 2016-2018)

Horton was not added to ltir that season because leafs did not need relief that year. They had the Matthews and marner contracts coming up and left the space needed. Nylander was also holding out and they would have had no way to set the ACSL.

All I'm suggesting in the post is "Event #1" and "Event #2" in the LTIR example cap friendly provides. Nothing more.

If you are talking about pre season and season ltir neither helps the knights with strome’s cap hit. You are adding shaws hit then giving them relief from it (in the form if exceeding the ACSL). Which would be net zero. The strome contract will still need to be shoe horned in with the same amount of space.

I like having this conversation. I'm not talking about Pre season. That's the reason I keep saying Day 2 of the season. Let's try this from a different angle. Tampa Bay!
https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/lightning

A.) How do you think they will be cap compliant when the season starts with Seabs contract?
B.) After the season starts, what would happen if someone (like Palat) got hurt? AND was officially out for the season.

The answers are for
A.) exactly what you're suggesting for Seabs. He'll be LTIR and TBLs cap hit drops by $6.875M and they'll be compliant. It's why everyone is suggesting they crushed the TJ - Seabs trade. No LTIR bucket.

B.) If Palat gets hurt during the season then the standard LTIR "Event A and Event B" occur. TBL will first send him the LTIR "Event A" and secondly recall or trade for someone else "Event B".

These two example have different results. The reason they're different is because of the exact thing you brought up initially. Cap accrues on a daily basis....once the season starts. It's not accruing right now. There were 116 days to the NHL last season. You need to start the clock...and then once it's started each day the daily cap amount adjusts.

So what I'm proposing...fits in category B above. It's after the season starts. It's not in the summer. There's a reason Shaw will stay on IR vs LTIR until after the season starts...Like Horton in 2017 and 2019. Bundle the "first" and "secondly" parts together. In the LTIR example by Cap Friendly...there will be $900k in ADDITIONAL relief. $3.9M - $3M = $900k.
