Targeting RFAs Dunn and Copp via trades

Created by: ML16

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 2, 2021

Description
Montreal should take advantage of their vast prospect pool to upgrade their current lineup with RFAs that have yet to be re-signed by their team…

Obtaining Dunn in return for stud prospect Harris (LD) + Kulak + 4th round pick should take care of the Habs’ dire need for an offensive-minded PMD in the short term. Seattle would get a cost-controlled effective third pair D in Kulak (1,85M AAV), a mid-round pick to absord this modest cap space and especially Harris, whose refusal to sign with Montreal and go back to college next year seems to indicate that he might want to sign his ELC with an American team.

As for the need for a middle-6 C to replace Danault, Copp recently filed for arbitration with Winnipeg and could thus be an interesting target. In return for Copp, the Habs would send Lekhonen, an effective, versatile and cost-controlled asset who can play both wings, excels in the PK and slide up and down the lineup; Poehling, a C poised to make his NHL debut sooner than later after a great AHL campaign last season and a 4h round pick, the latter which could be upgraded if Winnipeg doesn’t re-sign Lekhonen (who’ll still be RFA next offseason.)

imo dunn cost at least norlinder and a 2nd.

copp got 40 points in 55 games last year. jets aren't trading that for an 4th liner, a so-so prospect, and a 4th.

My understanding is that WPG can afford their 3 RFAs with 22/23 roster if they get about 11m AAV (Pionk 6m, Copp 4m, Stanley 1m)

At that AAV, Copp isnt traded by WPG. I think WPG could use Lehko on their shutdown line with Lowry, so a deal around Lehko-Copp could work.

Bergevin talked about a puck-moving D, so Dunn has to be on Bergevin radar. He can play RD like Soucy, an other D that could be moved by SEA (SEA would have 9 NHLers D if they resign their RFA).

I think that's not a good value for Dunn tho. Maybe keep Kulak and add a 2nd

Copp +1m, KK at around 2.5, keep Kulak 1.85 and maybe Dunn gets a bit more and we're still under the cap!

Nvm, you have Byron on LTIR, he'll be back this season so you have to add his 3.4 at some point, so it would be really tight with

Great player choices, but those teams want and can keep them.
