Version 22 Hughes Trade

Created by: CptMuffin
Team: 2021-22 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 3, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Does anyone actually see Hughes playing out his career in Vancouver? Make the trade now before the market can turn on him and make him Bure in 1998.

Also, I really like Petterson. I think he'll eventually be able to justify being one of the highest paid players in the league. I do not think he's there yet. 2 years @ $8 mill I feel is very fair value for where he is at right now and if he grows like he looks like he should over the 2 years, sure give him that Auston Matthews money over 8 years. 8 year $92 million deal no problem. But not yet.

Remember, its all BS and not likely to happen anyways.

New Jersey fans will say "TOO MUCH!" Also, New Jersey is starting to look pretty stacked.

  1. Hughes, Quinn [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Canucks fans will say "NOT ENOUGH!" I think this is more than fair value. I love Quinn in Vancouver but I truly don't believe he's a long term fit here.

Hughes is fine where he is. Let him develop a few more years and if we really need to trade him, we can get a much bigger package for him.

Still, Hughes can demand a lot more than “pretty good” once he’s developed his defensive game and has become elite two ways…

I don't think the value is bad, but I also don't think the Devils do this. Smith could become as good as Hughes, and the Devils may well suck next year (especially if we don't add more forwards) and can't afford to be giving up that pick.

Devils decline. Value isn't terrible but Ty Smith could end up being close to Quinn Hughes. Smith is already better defensively than Quinn, but not as good offensively. Adding a 2022 first which will likely be a lottery pick makes it even worse for the Devils

I'd prefer Smith ... I wouldn't be surprised is he proved to be equal, if not a better two way player, than Hughes long term. Only time will tell.

The 22 first is gold. Cant let that go.

I actually really like Smith and I wouldn't be interested in moving him for Hughes. Mostly because with Hamilton here as NJ's #1 defenseman, I think Smith is a terrific #2 going forward. Whereas Hughes is a #1 and will be paid like one which could be really tough for the Devils. Basically it comes down to I prefer Smith @5x5 over Hughes@ 7x9 or something.

All that said from a realistic standpoint I think that trade value is fair. I just don't think it's realistic. Both teams would probably prefer to keep their homegrown talent. Only way I really see Q. Hughes to NJ is if he specifically requests to leave Vancouver and play with his brothers. Which if it happened would more likely be a couple years down the road. And if that is the case and NJ has all of the leverage his value will be way down to a point where Smith is not going to be involved. I don't see it happening anyways, more likely he signs a long extension with Vancouver and maybe goes to NJ when he gets to UFA.

I don't think Hughes or Boeser will play out their careers in Vancouver.

I doubt Hughes gets past his bridge deal in Vancouver. If the Devils want a Hughes trio they will have to pay the piper and it will be more than this. The next GM will want to hit a home run if/when the time comes.

I think this needs to happen for both guys, both are young, un-developed with teams who have differing views on their respective ceilings. it's way to soon to trade either of them, GM's won't do it either as either player could pop off and make the trade look ridiculous.
