“Visible confusion”

The Canucks have way enough cap space for Petey Quinn and Big D…

I don't see the Canucks needing to do this deal, unless they plan on signing Petey and Hughes to long term contracts. I could believe that one of the two might go long term (likely Petey), but one or both will probably bridge for a lot lower.

Regarding the trade, I'm a fan of Derek Grant, the guy can play. He's on a good contract at $1.5M/yr, but I don't see offering two 3rd rounders plus Pearson and MacEwan. Neither of those two players have negative value, and the Canucks would be taking on Kesler's salary (unless it's insured, then forget this entire conversation). Grant for Pearson straight up?...sure. Grant for MacEwan + 3rd rounder?....sure. The rest of the package? Too much.

This isn't entirely right. IF Hughes goes 8 years, its gonna be at 8.5ish. If Hughes goes 5 years, its closer to 7ish and on a 3 year bridge (most likely) he gets around 6m

I agree but the posted deal is 5 years, at that point is 8.5. If he switches to a 3 year then yes the price is correct at 7.75

I mean you can't agree and say what you're saying haha. I am saying that at 5 years, Hughes DOES NOT get 8.5mil. If the term is 5 years, itll be closer to 7ish mil, maybe 7.5m at the maximum. At 3 years, its closer to 6m not 7.75m.

Everyone can say what they will about Jim Benning or any other top front-office guy, but no professional GM would have had Arizona retain precisely that amount from Ekman-Larsson's contract and not know what he was going to pay for Pettersson and Garland and Hughes (at least in terms of range).

The Canucks have 4 RFAs to sign - Pettersson, Hughes, Dickinson and Joulevi. Something has to give.
I don't think Hughes is worth more money than Chabot and certainly not worth Makar money.
How much more than Barzal 0.82 PPG is Pettersson 0.93PPG worth?
Personally I would trade Hughes for players and picks then sign Petey to a long term contract.

14+ Mil in cap space currently plus 3.5 mil of additional releif once Ferland is on LTIR again. so 17.5 in cap space.
Dickenson just filed for arbitration so opens a buyout window for VAN (Myers)

there is no need to panic at this point, if Benning thought they needed more cap space to sign their RFA's he would have made moves already to free up the space.

Isn't it nuts that Benning would sign Pearson then have to give up two draft picks to get rid of him to get cap.
Really more silliness about Kesler. He doesn't affect the cap at all.
