Yeah just throw in another pick for salary retention and it probably seems fair. I imagine the ask will be higher and that it will of course depend on the interest from other teams, but this looks like the minimum it will cost.

That's why I said at the deadline. Avs will have ~$3m in capspace with a 22 man roster and that capspace will accrue until the deadline where the Avs can add whatever they like. The cap is averaged over 186 days so having $3m unused for 3/4 of the season would allow them to add up to ~$12m in cap at the deadline.

Retention won't be necessary if Avs roll until the deadline with $3m in unused cap. See post above

I'm not very high on Bowers, so I'd probably try to look elsewhere for a deal if he won't sign in NSH. I'd probably try to get as close to the Duchene OTT/CBJ trade as I could.

Duchene had two playoff runs left, Forsberg will be a pure rental... Big difference in value.

If you don't like Bowers feel free to choose another B prospect.

A lot will change between now and then but historically Col hasn't been one of the teams who are foolish or desperate enough to burn high end assets for short term rentals at the tdl

I definitely agree, but may as well try for it. I wouldn't be happy settling for Bowers. I'd have to look at past deals, but I'd hope a top line winger in his prime would get more than a B prospect out of the deal.

edit: and @josi4norris is right (below) -- Duchene only played for CBJ for one playoff run.

Duchene was just a rental too when he was traded from Ottawa to Columbus. He was only in Columbus for one playoff run.

I mean you're not only getting a B prospect, that's the secondary asset in the deal. The 1st is obviously the piece that carries weight here. Look through the last few deadlines and there aren't many players getting a 1st + B prospect coming back. Even Stone with an extension only got Brannstrom (recent mid-1st pick), a 2nd, and a meh prospect.

I'd rather have a highly-touted prospect in Brannstrom than a late 1st.

But also Duchene was only in CBJ for one playoff run -- so there is precedent (both ways).

The Duchene to Columbus trade is a much better comparable.

It was:

Duchene (considered a mid-to-low-end 1C)
Julius Bergman, D prospect

for

Late 1st
Vitaly Abramov (B prospect)
Jonathan Davidsson (B- prospect)
Conditional 1st if he resigns.

The last part, the conditional 1st, is no longer allowed under the new CBA, so that we can ignore.

Abramov and Bowers are comparable. Davidsson for Bergman is a wash.

Bear in mind that Duchene is a Center whereas Forsberg is a winger, and centers typically cost a premium on top of wingers. A 1st + B prospect deal at the deadline is not far off fair value - though of course in any trade situation the price will be heavily influenced by how many interested parties there are and how many other comparable players are on the market as well.

Yea this would be a pretty lackluster return for Forsberg. I get that his point totals may not wow anyone (welcome to Nashville), but Preds fans can tell you he’s the most skilled forward on the team by far and probably the only true elite forward we have.

IMO the highest bidder is a contender that would be looking to resign him. I think a team like that would offer something closer to the Stone deal as y’all mentioned. If I’m Colorado I don’t want to pay more than what you put, but I doubt it gets it done unless the market collapses.

I would pay more, 1st + Kaut if you prefer him over Bowers.

If Forsberg comes with a solid extension we can certainly talk about adding more too.
