I mean, you’re giving up assets that you likely are hoping will even sniff the level of play Eichel is at. In almost every single Eichel trade, he will be the best player. He’s a bonafide 1C in the league and when he’s on his game he’s a top 10 center.

Say the habs give up KK, Romanov and 2 1sts or something lien that. KK won’t be as good as Eichel ever, Romanov while likely becoming a really good top 4 dman won’t have the impact Eichel has. Then you’re hoping your two 1sts are late, and likely won’t come anywhere close to Eichel. You’re essentially giving up the equivalent of 4 1sts for Eichel, and the pieces you give up will never touch what Eichel does.

That’s why Buffalo is so firm on their price because they lose any Eichel trade they do. Eichel will be the best player in the trade. Unless somehow they get a kings ransom and get a prospect like Byfield, Lafreniere, Beniers or something along those lines.

Right, but IMO Suzuki is our #1 KK is our #2 and Romanov is our Corner Stone For LHD with Guhle eventually. The need for an Eichel type player is there for Montreal but his contract ties up Montreal with way to much money past the next 2-3 years when they will need to sign the young guys. To me the price isn't the problem in an eichel trade its just I see this team being able to grow around the kids they got now better then they would to build around just eichel and smaller pieces.

Eichel at 8.5 Would be amazing but McDavid Exists and he's worth his contract but that makes people think they deserve more because of it and now players like Tavares are aging while making 11 Million. They need criteria for players to earn over 10 mil cause some players earn way too much

I was just using the MTL trade as an example as to why a team would pay the asking price. I do agree Eichel isn’t the right option for MTL. But there is rational behind the idea of paying buffalos asking price.

The whole contract market is broken right now. Way too many big contracts in a flat cap world (I know it will go up a mill after this year). It’s just insane that someone like Werenski gets 9.58, Jones gets 9.5, Nurse gets 9. None of those contracts are good, and will probably age poorly, all except maybe Werenski as he’s younger and less term.

It’s just insane to me how much teams are paying some guys.

I mean, agreed that players make too much, then you look at the NBA and your brain explodes. Lowry just signed a deal to make 30mil a year. Ridiculous. McDavid is likely worth more. I mean, is Marner really worth almost 11mil? NOPE. Point contract price is probably really accurate. I see a lot more players getting big money without looking at the team dynamic and impacts on getting a Stanley Cup. I think McDavid is worth his contract, but it holds the Oilers back from having a more rounded team (...also the location and especially management impact that too).

It makes some sense in other sports, as one player can have a much larger impact. That's just not the case in hockey. If you have a $20M player, your team will likely be worse, not better.

The $10M range should be reserved for a handful of players and 3rd/4th liners should not be getting long term deals for $4M, yet GMs hand them out like candy, and they are kind of forced to because another dummy will pay if you won't.
So instead of deals that make sense for the team and ther player, the team is expected to swallow some bad deals for short term gain.

I'd rather see a lower cap and lower prices for fans than see borderline "top line" players making almost as much as the best players in the league.
