I don't like that this contract walks him straight to UFA.

Hopefully there’s a gentleman’s agreement in place to get him signed longer term when there’s cap space. God willing he doesn’t pop off and have some career year or something .

ZAR is the new Tanev for us. Stepping up to the plate on this hits, pk minutes and strong scoring depth is what we need to see this season from him.

Rough summer for the Pens. Not sure why ZAR didn't get more term.

Just because the AAV is relatively low doesn't mean it's a good contract.

Brock McGinn is our new Tanev, not ZAR.

It's not bad it's not great.

I had him at 2 mil. So he got less.

But I also had him getting term.

Truth is, bottom 6 players really aren't to biggest issue on the penguins. OConnor is ready to step in, They have Caulfield who will probably sign this year later in the year. You also have Poulin going to be chomping at the bit for a mid 6 role.
All that adds up to not much space.
The penguins need cheap youth, he'll be an older expensive vet. In the end it will add up to him being gone after this contract is up.
I'm ok with that, he deserves to cash in, and this isn't the team with the cap for it.
What doesn't need to happen is this team doesn't need to turn into a team that spends a large chunk of it's cap on the 4th line while the middle 6 struggles.

I'm completely fine with this. I Don't think Pittsburgh needs the extra year. We should let him go elsewhere after this.

Probably could've signed him for less, but its no big deal. Still a productive bottom 6 forward.

I see what's going on here. Next season Pens will have TO PAY RUST to keep him and they'll must re-sign Malkin and Letang. So, they'll be our priority. We will need cap space to do so. That's why I agree 100% with this 1 year deal with Aston Reese.
