My hope is that this drags down the price of defenseman extensions.

Friendly reminder chicago gave a worse dman a 9.5 AAV over 8 years

This year's a good year to be an expiring defenseman. Esa Lindell has more offense than Plech yet most complain it's not a great contract.

Looking at comments, I guess I didn't pay enough attention to NYI, that's a steep price for a defensive D man

Pelech is not just a defensive defenseman. He can drive offense at a high level.

We don’t need the reminder Andrew.

I may be in the minority here but this contract seems expensive for the team and the term is high risk but I could see this paying off for NYI.

Its worth noting that Pelech’s contract has no signing bonuses and no escrow protection. I can’t believe his agent let him sign this contract. What a steal.

That's a reach to call him "an offense carrier" after back2back sub 30% EV Offense seasons ... We'll see if he can maintain his high offensive EV but that's an 8 year leap of faith.

Pelech can have identical seasons to his 18-19 + 19-20 going forward and he’d still be well worth 5.75 mill. He’s coming off his age 26 season, it’s a good bet he’ll be above average at driving offense in the future.

Pelech is my personal favourite player and he's probably our best D-man, and DEFINITELY our best shutdown D-man. That Pelech-Pulock pairing is deadly.

Given the current market for Dman this is a steal.
Now if it ends up being a good contract or not depends on future play in that 8 years.
But as of now, it looks really solid. Teams handing out these 9.5 million contracts are looking at this and realizing they are idiots.

Shows how bad the D market is, that this is considered a "steal". It's a digestible contract for a 20+ minute defenseman who contributes at least some offense despite not being used on the power play.

Team that appears to be on the verge of a cup gets bargain signings from their guys. Shouldn’t be surprising, no one wants to leave, everyone has unfinished business. Gotta think Pelech wants Lou to get that last guy to push us over the top.

All in all, a FANTASTIC signing.

All of this "agent needs to be fired" is overblown. Cup contenders are always able to get a good amount of their players signed for a little less than market value. Agents recognize the appeal of signing with an elite squad of players.

Not a "good" signing -- a GREAT signing. Price and term are really unimportant if (a) he fits under the cap without having to move anyone, like, say, Devon Toews, and (b) the team keeps advancing towards actual Stanley Cup contention. I'm betting that they will.

Okay signing, now i don’t watch NYI too much but this is too much term, AAV is good though, defensive D’s are so hard to judge

Way better deal than say, $6.75M for 6 years. This allows Lou more cap flexibility over the next few years, especially while their window to contend is wide open.

I understand the value of creating offense from the back end, but offensive D's are tremendously overvalued in today's free agent market. Seth Jones is a glaring example, but the list is a long one.

The salary is about right but the term is insanity. The way Pelech battles he will be a shell of himself by year 4.

Isles’ core will be depleted by then anyways. Lee, Nelson, Bailey, etc, will all be on their way out or retired by then and the Isles will need to spend those years retooling whether Pelech’s making big money or not.

How can a guy who literally had 14 points be in the 95th percentile of offensive players this past season?

He was driving offense at a high level , generated a ton of high danger scoring chances. The lack of points is because the isles lack shooting talent, forwards weren’t converting on the chances he created. He also doesn’t play on the powerplay , even though he should so that affects his point totals as well.

But 14 is ridiculously low for a guy who is supposedly an elite offensive talent... If you supposedly are that good at something you should have numbers to show for it

Defenseman do not control shooting % - you’re putting too much weight into points. You can be elite at driving offense , but if the forwards can’t finish that’s the defensemans fault.
