I would rather have Johnny Tavares on a team for 11 mill cap hit over Marner for the same price.

I like Johnny T over Seguin at 2c.

You're over the cap by a lot.

Posts like this don't make a lot of sense because every trade/draft selection will have a knock down effect on the more recent ones.

For instance, Eller was the pick that the Maple Leafs initially traded away, but there isn't a guarantee they pick him. This also means that Toskala isn't a Maple Leaf, which could mean that Couture isn't a Shark. Not a terrible effect on the roster, but around this time Toronto was pretending to be a playoff team and they needed a 1A/1B goaltender. Depending on what they do, this either puts them higher in the 2008 draft or much lower, which could be the difference between drafting Pietrangelo or Zack Boychuk.

Same with the Kessel trade, which I a) think was a blunder and b) undoing drastically changes the roster. Let's say that the Leafs don't do that trade and pick Seguin and Hamilton. This would mean that the team wouldn't be pushing for the lottery in 2014-2016, so no Nylander, Marner or Matthews.

Josi?

I am pretty sure the picked that was used to select Josi was once owned by the Leafs

I could be wrong on that though

First off, that’s diving way too deep. Secondly, you are apparently wrong. Arizona owned the pick.

I don’t like these because there’s just so many more players you could add.

However, there’s also the chance the player player taken with a certain pick isn’t taken by the original team. And if the Leafs, for example, had Seguin and Hamilton they probably wouldn’t have Nylander, Marner or Matthews or who knows who else.

Some other notable traded draft picks though:
Josi
Manson
Kase (who’s here now anyways)
Smith
Saad
Grubauer
Pettersson
Konecny
Carlsson
Steel
Comtois
Jarvis
Foudy
Levi
Ceulemans

Everyone had chances to take both Point and Kucherov when they were drafted. Multiple teams could have picked Vasilevskiy or Hellebuck. Teams draft some players but they will miss out on others. Pavelski went in the 7th round of his draft and look where he is now. Everyone passed over him until the Sharks took a chance. Over 1000 games played, captain of SJ for a while, and almost 1000 points.
