Rebuild - Kap to EDM

Created by: MNCountryClub
Team: 2021-22 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 9, 2021
Published: Aug. 10, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I’m sure I’ll get pushback. The idea here is to increase demand by retaining and thereby increase the price/return. With 50% retained, you’d have a lot more teams in the conversation. I’m really not sure on value. I think it’d be relatively close to an Eichel package, but not quite there.

Fiala deal is more or less a proxy for expected value, though I do think NJ makes a lot of sense.

Make the pick top 10 protected and I would consider it

If MIN can’t get a better offer elsewhere, that’s seems like a fair compromise.

Would you actually like an explanation or are you just worked up and blowing off some steam?

You probably could get a return similar to that Edmonton one without retention. Especially if you are taking a contract like kassians back.

I was wondering about that too, but I wasn’t sure and figured it better to err on the side of undervalue vs overvalue on this site. Appreciate the feedback.

Edmonton would be a great place for Kap on a short term deal like this, get 3 good futures back and I think it looks good for everybody.

I like Kaprizov but I'm not sure I'd give up three 1sts + a 2nd for him - including one of the top prospects in the game. That's a whopping payment for a guy who, at 24, was 28th in scoring in the NHL this year.

Unless you think Holloway is going to be point per game guy in the next 3 years, I think this is a reasonable ask. Drop the 2nd or Bourgault if need be but throwing Kap on Leon’s wing would be nuts. This is exactly the kind of deal you make to maximize the best player in the game.

Understandable. I can appreciate EDMs reservations. I tried to compensate for the sticker shock by taking back Kassian and retaining on Kaprizov, but I def understand your argument.

EDM would have 2 completely devastating lines. I think securing Kaprizov would directly lead to a cup finals appearance at least once within the next 3 years for EDM. And that’s why I think it’s worth it for them to consider this.

Hence why it’s a good move for Edmonton. It would be a clear sign for McDavid too and that’s worth something.

Yeah, I do. He was #1 in the NCAA with 1.84 P/GP until he got injured with 4 games to go (but he still played those games), ahead even of teammate Cole Caufield. That's an NHLe of 50 points per 82, and that's while driving his own line without a McDavid or Draisaitl linemate.

In any case, I'm not sure why "point per game guy in the next 3 years" is your line in the sand for several reasons: (a) Holloway is far from the only piece in the deal, there are TWO more 1st round picks + a second + a player, and (b) in 3 years Holloway will be 22, expecting him to hit P/GP by 22 is a little unfair when Kaprizov didn't even do it at 24.

It’s absolutely arbitrary. But I used it as the Kaprizov replacement, who I would bank on to being close to 80 points over the next couple years. NHLe of 50 isn’t that and it assumes perfect translation 2 levels up. I think Holloway is going to be a good player, but I don’t think he’ll hit the ceiling you think or as fast as you think.

Just my 2 cents. I think Kap would look great on Edmonton.

Once again, you're comparing a 19-year-old Dylan Holloway with what you think Kaprizov will achieve at 25 - 27, while totally ignoring that there are 3 more significant pieces in the trade.

Not to mention that Holloway has several other advantages over Kaprizov: defensive ability, position, size and strength, etc. even as a 19-year-old.

No, I’m staying that a 25-27 yo vet has a more certain production outcome than a 19 yo prospect that has yet to play a game in the NHL. There is much more risk, both in terms of upside and ability to actually stick with the prospects. If you want to win a cup, you need to maximize certainty and upside. Kaprizov has realized it. Holloway is still all potential.

Sure, but they Oilers want their contention window to be open for a LOT longer than 3 years.

The trade isn't just Holloway, you keep missing that point. And if you want to be a contender, you need cheap talent coming up all the time - and the only way to do that is to keep your high picks as they play very cheaply on their ELC.
