Copp trade to Detroit

Created by: Lancebmx
Team: 2021-22 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 10, 2021

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ideally if I'm Yzerman I try and gain a couple second round picks from teams by taking on a couple contracts before giving up my own.
Winnipeg recoups the seconds they traded away and gain two solid roster players to replace the ones lost.
Stanley looks to be expendable with the players they brought in this off season and Detroit could use some LD for next season. Jets get some improvement on their right side with Stetcher and get a good well rounded forward with Namestnikov to replace Copp.
I have Pionk the Pelech contract in terms of money, he might get a bit more. If that is the case then maybe the Jets find a new home for Beaulieu or send him with the package to Detroit.
If it was needed im sure retention could be added to the Namestnikov contract.

Is this value alright what are the thoughts?

Don't have the cap space to resign Copp, Stanley is like 5th on the depth chart for LD now after their recent trades if Heinola comes up to play. Recoup two second rounders that they traded away and gain two solid roster players to fill out the roster. That's why.

Keep the trade simple- Copp for Namestnikov and a 2nd. Wpg is trying to shed salary so trading Stanley for Stecher doesn't do it even if a second is included.

I would almost rather prefer that, just trying to potentially fill another weak spot on each team as well.

Also salary retention could be added to one of those two players.

The Jets aren't trading Stanley and it isn't likely they'll want a rental back for Copp.

I missed that Names is going to be an UFA next year so I am taking Copp for Names and a second off the table.

Idk, think I'd still do it, how much more could they really get for Copp at this point? He only has one year of RFA left so there's risk for any team that acquires him that he might just force himself to UFA, a 2nd and Namestnikov isn't bad and Namestnikov could be useful for a year, hes put up some okay numbers in the past.

I see the Jets defence looking something like:

Morrissey Pionk
Dillon Schmidt
Stanley DeMelo
Beaulieu/Niku rotating with Stanley as needed.

As for the trade, I’m all for Detroit picking up Copp, but I’m not sure we need Stanley. Staal, DeKeyser, Leddy, and Oesterle can play the left side, with McIsaac getting a look at some point possibly. He’d be an upgrade no doubt, I just don’t see the fit. What about Edmonton? They could use both guys and should be in on them IMO. Copp would make the top 9 very strong and Stanley could be 3LD

I was picking up Stanley more as a team controlled LD option for next season. Also he's young and could be a good third pairing guy with Lindstrom in the future.

Not too mention Namestnikov could sign an extension for a couple more probably around the same dollar amount. Either way they have young guys coming up that are going to be taking those roster spots in the next year or two.

"WPG doesn't have cap"
Proceeds too take back as much cap as Copp will most likely get. Yeah dude, it's flawed.
Like everyone else said, Names and a 2nd for Copp.

He'll do a sign and trade without any problem. How long do you want, two years?

How much is Copp demanding to resign?

Published guesses on what will happen ...
The Athletic (Ates): $4.2 million x 1-2yrs
Sportsnet (Wiebe): $4.4 million x 4yrs
Evolving Hockey model: $5.1 million x 4yrs

Well I think that's a bit off, in that trade scenario Detroit takes 900K plus whatever Copp signs for, so let's say total about 5M. I sent back 3.7M and always have the option to retain on Namestnikov or Stetcher if it was needed.
In this scenario Jets get an upgrade on RD as to allow Schmidt to play the left side. Also replace the hole left by Copp with Namestnikov. May seem flawed but it works on this scenario.
