What the leafs will look like if the sign Rielly

Created by: noobmaster69
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 12, 2021
Published: Aug. 12, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
For everyone wondering why the Leafs fans on this site are trading Rielly. If we sign him this team will never win a cup because the teams depth is terrible.

Might as well get something for him to make the team even better.

Not to mention they are 3.5M over the cap here so kind of why he needs to be traded.

Well sure if you don’t trade Muzzin, overpay Sandin and don’t bring up any rookies. Yeah it looks bad.

I mean I feel like you might want to not spend ten million on goaltending before giving up Rielly. Also, If Sandin is so good to get 3.5 million then you can consider moving on from Holl or Dermott (or Rielly, but that would probably require moving him in season). Also fair to consider that if Ritchie and Bunting (or Robertson who isn't here) are working out in the top six and Kampf is working out at 3C what exactly is Kerfoot providing to this team and whether it might be prudent to move on. Bottom six guys have to come cheaper than 3.5 unless they're centers.

No reason to galaxy brain trading good players in your contention window when that doesn't have to be the path. Given what some defensemen are getting, that Rielly contract is more than fair for Toronto.

If they re-sign Rielly to 8+ Mill, the Sens will be better than them ahead of schedule

What's crazy is that considering what D are getting right now, that's a crazy underpay for Rielly. You're probably right, he's just got to go. Someone is gonna give Rielly 8-9million, but it sure can't be the Leafs right now

Sens future doesn't scare anyone. Your team values grit, fighting, and hitting, and less on the skill side of the spectrum. Will the Sens be better considering Brady Tkachuk wants to leave?

Brady never said he wanted to leave. Also Stutzle, Batherson, Tkachuk, Norris, Pinto, Chabot, Sanderson, Brannstrom, Gustavsson. Good luck facing that.

A bunch of projected 3rd/4th liners will scare us? Tkachuk said that his future with Ottawa will be decided whether he thinks the team will win a Stanley Cup

You mean Batherson and Norris who were on pace for 50+ pts in their first year. Tkachuk who leads the league in hits and shots while also on pace for 50+ pts ?

Which players 22 and under who put up 50pts are projected 3rd/4th liners just curious?

I hope so wink

If I was GM of the leafs right now with no hate, no way I’m giving Rielly 8+ mill. Offer him 7 mill over 6 years, if he doesn’t take it, just trade him. 50 mill for 5 players would be too much money

So why’d they trade for McCann as a back up Kerfoot if Kerfoot wouldn’t have value after this season? I’m agreeing with you but now most likely if Kerfoot plays in the bottom 6 this season his value is ranked cause no team is giving up much for a 3rd liner with 1 year left, especially not a prospect like Hallinder who they gave away to be in this position right now. Confusing chimes

Oh yeah I mean if I had been the Leafs I probably would have protected both Kerfoot and McCann. It's even worse than just using McCann as a Kerfoot shield (since they could have always done 7F 3D and kept them both), they essentially chose to lose Hallinder, the pick and McCann in order to protect...Justin Holl. Who is like, fine? Idk, baffling asset management imo.

I kind of disagree with my own premise a bit because I don't think Michael Bunting is going to be a top six forward and I don't reaaaally know that Nick Ritchie is either, ideally, so Kerfoot might just end up being the best option to throw up there anyway and then if that works you can just keep him. And I guess I should have clarified that 3.5 mil isn't too much for a third line forward on most teams, but it is on the Leafs where they're so top heavy. I think there would be takers for a perfectly fine 3C making 3.5 mil against the cap (and only 2.7 mil in real money), and I'd move the perfectly fine 3C for at least something (even if it's less than what they gave up for McCann) versus losing the top end talent that Rielly provides, at least offensively.

But yeah, overall a bad look for them if they do that.
