Great! Figured it would only be a one year deal. Let's see if he was a one year wonder or not...the Jets are now set

He’ll no doubt not re-sign next year. He took about 1 million off of what he’s worth just to get to UFA status next year.

He doesn't want out...he just wants paid. If they Jets could afford him at 4.5, he would have got that

Don’t like it at all tbh. Should have secured term even if it meant moving a guy like demelo. Anything under 4.5M would have been fine.

Still relatively a good signing.

I like it, helps the Jets a lot this year! People who don't know the organization will probably say he wants out (as they already have) but I think the door is wide open for a longer term deal to be worked out during the season. If the Jets want to keep him, I have no doubt they will. If I am wrong and he just wants to walk, I'm glad we were able to keep him for one more season to help with a dep playoff push.

Outstanding deal for a player just reaching their prime like Copp who can consistently produce on a 40-50 point pace in an 82 game season. Love the AAV for the jets but this may be Copps last year as a jet.

Guessing they look the one year deal to avoid any "bad blood" from arbitration in the event they can reach an agreement for a long term deal before next summer. But if he puts up another season like last year, he will certainly get a big offer from someone. Middle 6 player who can player centre or wing, fantastic penalty killer and can be a PP2 guy. Not saying he's exactly like Hyman but considering what Hyman got Copp and his agent have to be thinking there will be a long term deal with $$$ for him

Waiving/trading Niku and running a squad of 22, the Jets will be able to almost perfectly get all of Little's cap hit as LTIR relief.

That's an outstanding cap hit for Copp, the tradeoff being that it's only one year. There's a chance he re-signs, but with this term, it's more likely he's making his way out of Winnipeg...

The Wings fan in me is having pipe dreams of Copp coming back home to Michigan, lol

I just hope that Heinola or Samberg come in and so we trade one of our new D pickups next off season and get Copp long term

Money is good but this walks him straight to UFA. With the focus most likely on PLD extension dont see the jets affording him as someone is gonna outbid them next season.

Have a feeling he will be a Kraken in 2022

Uggh I'd be terrified to give him high 4's. He has been a high 2/low 3's guys for his career and just had a career year. I think its a good prove yourself deal

Good prove yourself deal. I think in the end the Jets made the right decision. They gave up control, by not buying UFA years, but frankly he probably would have wanted more coming off a career year. I think it was the right gamble to give themselves the out, but also risk losing him in a year for nothing.

The leafs and Oilers are both have better top end players but the Jets are the deepest and the best goalie so I'm tempted to agree.

I think the key questions for the team are:

1) centres. Part 1 Can PLD be a game changer centre as he has been for months at a time in his career but not yet consistently?

2) centres part 2. How much more does Stastny have left in the tank? The Stastny of the last two years is a good 3 C and a passable if necessary 2c. But he has shown clear decline from his best days in his early to mid 20s. How much more does he have in the tank? And is he going to have to play 2c because PLD isn't doing it?

3) their D. On paper I like it. They are doing a better job of what the leafs (my team) are trying to do, which is build a deep core of good players, if no superstars. Morrissey is a first pairing defenseman, but no superstar and Pionk seems to be hitting stride at similar. They have about 4-5 more guys who are #2-5D. All that being said I liked the sound of Schmidt in Vancouver and other D that haven't panned out. They've made a lot of changes. It needs to prove it works on the ice not just on paper

Otherwise Scheifele is grossly underrated league wide. Their wingers may be best in the league. And they have a world class goalie.

Great AAV and avoid arbitration but walk Copp straight to UFA and I don't think he's staying if he didn't want a longer term deal.

I voted “no”, not because the Cap Hit is too high but because it walks him straight to unRestricted free agency in 10 months time. He could be the Zach Hyman of 2022.
