Drouin isn't worth a 1st round pick, even at 50% retention.

If I read this correctly, the idea is to trade Drouin next year, after he has shown he is back to health and notches 55+ points. In that case, he'd certainly be worth a first-rounder to any contender. That said, I don't know why the Habs would be looking to let him go. At 55 points, he's a solid contributor but is unlikely to get much of a raise when he hits UFA in 2023.

Exactly if he put up a 55point season with salary retained he is worth a 1st, especially if the kings are back to being competitive which it looks like they will be very soon and on top of that they sit in the weakest division in hockey at this moment, could work out but to your point why move him if he is producing again. I personally think that they only do that if they have someone specific in mind to bring in like a forsberg cuz that's a solid upgrade on Drouin.

There are very few players, especially forwards, that are worth a 1st round pick in the final year of their contract. Drouin is not one of them. Toffoli returned Madden and a second as a rental, Drouin shouldn't return any more than that.

In that particular case, the difference is that Toffoli was coming in off a down season and only for the last 20 games of the regular season. Forwards are often traded at the draft for high picks and former first-rounders, as they become part of the team from the beginning of the season. I would also assume that any summertime trade for Drouin would include a plan to sign an extension, so perhaps there'd be some protection for the Kings if he did not re-sign (perhaps a 3rd).

Toffoli was not having a down season. He was one of the only Kings' forwards that were actually playing well. He had a lot of bad luck in the previous season (2018-19) where he had several goals disallowed due to offsides, and hit what must be a record number of goalposts. Even in that season, his advanced metrics showed he was tops on the team. In 2019-20, he was back to form and was on pace for another 25g in LA before getting traded to Vancouver.

You're not allowed conditional picks based on re-signing anymore. They did away with that last summer.

The most I'd consider giving up is a 2nd and a B prospect for Drouin, and only if Montreal retains a good portion of his contract.
