No team is going to retain $3M a yr for the next 5 years. And that SJS trade like wth. I’m not even a SJS fan and I know they hang up laughing then proceed to call every media person they know to let them know how ridiculous that trade is.

We're not giving up what is likely a top 10 1st to move Vlasic and also giving you Timo. Not gonna happen -not even close.

…why would CBJ, a rebuilding team, give up draft picks for three sub-par rentals?

Why do people expect Edmonton to shell out high picks in order to downgrade their goaltending?

Huh?

What do they need to save money for? They're a playoff team, their goal is to ice the best possible team every night. They aren't going to downgrade to save a few bucks.

Sabres wouldn't retain that much for that package (it's nice, but that much retention is poison). Somebody already pointed out that you can only retain on 3 contracts. I wouldn't touch the vlasic contract, and much like Skinner, they are right to say that whatever the cost is, it's not worth paying it to move him. I think jokiharju gets what mittelstadt is getting here, its fair for what they have done (glimpses of promise) and the hope the team has that they are part of the new core. As far as the other trades- sure, whether this is the right teams or not, trading guys that aren't the future for decent picks is the right move. I'm open to weaponizing cap, like koskinen, short term deals that come with a pick.

Koskinen isn't good and they can use the money elsewhere. Maybe they don't, but let's not act like it's ludacris or out of line with other cap dump prices lately

Koskinen has been average over the past two seasons. Among 58 goalies to play at least 35 games Koskinen's .910 sv% was 29th best.

However, Koskinen's numbers were dragged down by the beginning of 20-21 when Smith was injured and Holland screwed up the backup situation repeatedly, which meant that Koskinen had to play every game of a wicked schedule - 12 games in 24 nights traveling thousands of miles through 4 time zones - which isn't something ANY goalie can stand up under. It wasn't fair to Koskinen but Tippett had little choice but to keep throwing him over the boards, so his results were poor over that stretch. I don't fault Koskinen for that, he did his best in an impossible situation.

If you pull those 12 games out of the equation to get a look at how he performs under normal circumstances, his save percentage over the past two seasons is .916, which places him 17th of the top 58 goaltenders - 70th percentile.

Now, if you look at CapFriendly's list of top-earning goaltenders, you'll see that Mikko has the 19th highest cap hit. He's not overpaid, he's not a cap dump. The Oilers need him a lot more than they need the cap space, as they won't be able to use it to upgrade any other part of the roster enough to offset the downgrade that is losing Koskinen.

Nothing about this is worth a high pick.

Very well thought out response. The problem with Koskinen is that people who have never watched him play only hear of the bad games and think that every game went that way. I still think they need to upgrade but Dell isn't better just cheaper.

Koskinen's salary is irrelevant, expiring, and it actually helps them if they want to make a trade deadline move because of LTIR.
