What's the point of retaining $2M on Johansen, if they have to take Drouin back? Paying $8M for Johansen is still much better value than paying $7M for Drouin.

They save $500k for 2 years and $6M for the 2 years after that. The alternatives are $8M for 4 years, $2.67M for 8 years, convincing someone to take him (possibly costing assets), or retain a higher amount (save up to $4M for 4 years).

This idea at least has the benefit of maximizing relief in years 3 and 4 without giving up assets. You could potentially showcase Drouin and move him at one of the next 2 deadlines as well.

It's at least worth considering for both sides, but it's easier for Montreal to say no here.

I was gonna say that as well. We get that Joey is overpaid but he’s still productive defensively. Drouin would be just as overpaid so what’s the point. Plus I much rather have Joey

Coming from a team not cap strapped it’s just as easy to say no for the preds. Johansen might be overpaid but he’s not useless.

Aside from his lack of point production, Johansen is still a pretty good player. Hoping to showcase Drouin seems unlikely. Most forwards experience a drop in scoring when they get to NSH. Drouin's already on such a steep downward trajectory that he'd have to start shooting at his own net to get any worse.

I get that, but this would be predicated on Nashville taking 1-2 years to retool, after which those cap savings could be used to improve the team.

Don't buy into that narrative. Drouin has been consistently around the 2.0 points/60 mark his entire career. Nowhere near a steep downward trajectory.

Sorry, I was referring to his goal scoring specifically being in a free fall. His assist totals haven't flatlined the way his goal output has.

Okay, but that's not the whole picture.

He's shooting less and passing more. He's taken more of a playmaking role. Nothing wrong with that.
Even with that in mind, his average shooting percentage is 9%. Last year it was 2.6%. That's not a decline, it's an anomaly.

It's possible whatever was affecting him played a part, so it's important to see how he is this year, but one down year is hardly a decline. He was on pace for 21 (matching a career high) the year before.

Johansen is also a play maker but when you get put on the line with Grimaldi and sissons for some of the year they don’t bury those passes like forsberg and arvi used to do. He hardly played with forsberg the last 2 years and arvi hasnt been the same since he got cross checked in the back by Bortuzzo a couple years ago. The preds are lacking goal scorers. If you have any of them you wanna get rid of well take them lol

The hope would definitely be for more production from Ryjo with a change of scenery and more opportunity. The caveat is that he is as likely to become a $6M 3C as a serviceable 2C, depending on KK's progression.

Like I said. It makes sense for both teams, but Johansen is the riskier side of the equation simply due to the longer term. Drouin could completely bomb and still work out better for Nashville.

As for moving goal scorers, it might be an option if we hadn't just committed to the few we have.

Toffoli, Hoffman, Anderson, and Caulfield, aren't likely to move because it's bad form to sign someone and dump them shortly after (unless their performance warrants it).

Of those who have been around long enough to be considered, Gallagher obviously isn't going anywhere, Armia is good for double digits but just re-signed, Suzuki isn't moving, and KK would only be available in a trade to significantly improve with a "sure thing".

That leaves:
Drouin, who is probably more useful than people are willing to admit, especially now that we have some legitimate snipers.
Lehkonen, who the team didn't commit to long term, but he's only good for around a dozen goals.
Byron, who's good for PK and speed, but not good for contract value.
And Evans, who is way more valuable to us than as a trade chip.

We're not the right team to talk to for a goal scorer right now. At least 1 more year before any of ours might be moved.

I really like the forsberg trade, if it helps distract from others going on about Drouin and Johansen
