Hawks in Cap Hell Next Year

Created by: ChiHawk
Team: 2022-23 Chicago Blackhawks

Description
Just demonstrating why the Hawks are in trouble next year.

Obviously they buyout or trade Connolly.
Strome likely is not on the team, but he's going to be around $4M is my guess
Kubalik gets a long term team friendly deal
Dach gets bridged, he's is really young so perhaps his bridge is in the $3M range versus a flat $4M
Murphy is obviously valuable and worth $4.5M, is this a long term deal?
Lankinen should improve even more, can we get him for $2M and who's sharing the net?
Kurashev is interesting as he is incredible young, does he prove he's worth more?
Kalynuk, if he proves more could he be worth more? Where does Caleb fit in with Beaudin in the wings?
I wouldn't be surprised to see Tyler Johnsson moved if he has a resurgence, he just is too expensive for this team.

It's very hard to say right now, but if I had to guess, Strome, Nylander, and Johnsson aren't on the team in a year.

There's very intriguing goalie options and LD options on the market. Hawks don't have a bonafide top line LHD guy unless McCabe stays healthy and shows more. He's a very solid 2nd line player like Murphy, and with guys like Lindholm available, it would be ideal for the Hawks to grab someone like that.
Lindholm - Jones
McCabe - Murphy
Stillman - Mitchell
That could very well be a championship blue line, but again, no cap space. Do we use Kalynuk or Beaudin to dump Connolly? Do we use Strome to dump Johnsson? What happens in net?

Lots of questions to be answered during this season, but ultimately, the Hawks are going to be hard pressed against the cap next season as shown below no matter what.

I can also see Toews and Kane getting a big paycut after next year so it's fine for the likes of Dach to get a short term deal

They definitely will both get pay cuts before the 2023/2024 season. Somewhere in half of where they are now, but that still doesn't solve next year.

That Seth Jones contract is going to be a real pain for the Blackhawks

I agree, overpaid by $1.5M to $2M at this point, let's hope that his play from last year isn't a indicator of the future because if it is, then it's an overpay of $2.5M to $3M.

Lets hope flower likes it enough here to stick around one more year? Assuming Johnson, Connely, Strome, and Dehaan are all gone in a year (however that happens... just play along) there's atcually enough cap space to build a real contender. If Flower is still playing like a real good goalie a year from now and takes a one year deal to stick around, we could be a scary good team.

but if his play gets back to where it was, and I do think it will improve... Torts system held him back, then it isn't so bad. Especially assuming Toews/Kane pay cuts and Johnson/Connely dumps/buyouts and Strome trade+dehaan walking. Free's up plenty of money imo

Well the example above is a pretty clear indicator of where we are at. Obviously De Haan is gone above, Connolly is bought out. Strome and or Johnson needs to get traded to improve our first line LHD, but still stuck without a goalie if Lankinen isn't a #1. Or we sign a top goalie and stuck without a top line LHD. Unfortunately, for both goalies and top line LHD guys, next year is the year to fish in free agency not the year after when Toews and Kane's big deals come off the books.

I'd be shocked if Nylander is worth that much after this season. Bury Johnson, trade Strome and you're right there. Dach money might be a bit high, but again lots of question marks. Lank might want more, we'll see, but this isn't end all be all. Strome has to go for a LD at some point, doesn't he? I'm not sure what else they could be thinking. Toews Dach Gaudette Borgstrom Khaira and Johnson can play C. Johnson could easily replace anyone at 3C if they fail.

Tried to look at realistic but high end signing scenarios.

LHD and goalie free agent market are ripe next off-season so hopefully they can move Strome, Johnson, Connolly for starters and sign someone like Lindholm. If Lanks doesn't prove himself this year, then instead of a top line LHD, we'll be seeking a goalie more importantly. We don't have the cap room for both though.

Lots of question-marks that will be easier to answer at the start of the new calendar year.
