This is a very good contract. Yes, it'll be tough during the last few seasons, but nothing so egregious that a cap floor team won't take at the end for some veteran leadership. During the 5-6 year period that Philly needs the cap savings from the 8 year term, it's a really solid contract.

I don't think it's too bad. The term is always a risk at that age, but he'll still be solid defensively even if his production starts to fall off. Hopefully the last couple of years align with a rebuild so his salary doesn't become too much of a factor if that happens.

There are few players I would sign past 35 at that amount, but I think he's one of them.

A good AAV, but a bad term. I can see this contract as a bad one in something about it's last 3 years. Not one of the worst contracts, but definitely not one of the best either.

Many people dont like term. But his defensive game so good even after offensive regression he will be worth this contract.

I really like coots, but oh man is that long. He will be nearly 38 when it's over.

Genuinely don't know what to make of this deal.

It's just an ok contract. As I just said, not one of the worst contracts, but definitely not one of the best either.

Okay, wow. Not the reaction I was expecting... this guy is the same age as Hyman whose 1-year-shorter, $2.25M-cheaper deal was massively downvoted due to being too much for too long...

Couturier being a Selke-caliber center helps make said deal a better one than Hyman's. Also, the 8 year term was clearly agreed upon to keep the overall cap hit down.

As a Pens fan, I’m not the biggest Flyers fan but I have to admit, I think Sean over here, is one of the best two way players in the league.

Giving him a full no move for almost the entire contract....that's part of the reason why I voted 'No' for this one.

Its not hard to see that the term is long to offset the low yearly AAV.

On the open UFA market he gets 8.5mil or more easily for almost the same term. For those of you looking at the last year or two of his contract, do you think that a 5 or 6 year deal at 9mil or more is better? Hes a 65pt plus player who won a selke, you don;t think he gets 9mil or more for 6 years? This helps the team for the 5-6 years, and a NMC works only as long as both sides want it to work, players do waive their NTC or NMC.

Realists see this as a great AAV with a year too long, but not acknowledging the trade off of that extra year or two for the low AAV are just crazy.

It's an extension. The contract doesn't kick in until next year.

At first I liked the deal, then I looked at the details. There's a NMC for the first seven seasons, then a M-NMC for the last. Also, there's not a single season where his base salary is higher than his singing bonus, meaning this contract can't be bought out. This contract might look good now, but I fear it will age very, very poorly.

Im curious how this impacts the Zibinijad contract extension for the NYR. Zib has a slightly better pts/gm ratio but Cout is clearly the better defensive player. They are also the same age as well. This, along with the Nugent-Hopkins deal could be just what is needed to keep the contract within reason. As far as this contract is concerned, I think it is great for the FLyers for sure and certainly means that giroux will be making his way to free agency after this season after seeing his buddy JV leaving via trade this offseason.

I think a 5x9 contract would have been a better, he would have gotten his top 15 player type money and they dont have to risk paying oodles for a past prime big man
