Johansen

Created by: Steve_321

Initial Creation Date: Aug. 27, 2021
Published: Aug. 27, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Better for NSH to trade and recoup some assets then buyout and get nothing.

It's a bit of a gamble for the habs for sure - but with real scoring wingers i think he can produce, has a history of putting up big assist numbers. The Athletic lists his annual value at ~2M - so anyone thinking this isn't a fair offer is smoking something.

The value is not inherently bad, but man that retention screws them completely. They get worse package with almost the same cost as Johansen is. Renders it completely pointless.

OP

Personally, for Ryan Johansen @ 4.5 x 4 years, I'd easily offer more than that

And well, not a big thing but Ottawa doesn't need Kulak at all, even for free.

OTT declines. We have more LHD than we could possibly need so there's no point in adding another one. But at that price I'm sure some team would grab him.

If you're trading for Johansen, you're basically paying for the retention. I have no doubt they'd be willing to move one of their $8M centers for nothing, but if they are retaining there has to be a benefit to doing so.

Let's say Lehkonen for $1M retained. They sign him for 4 years @ $2M. Having Lehkonen for the equivalent of $3M saves them $5M. Not the best contract still, but much more manageable.

Think what you would have to pay a 3rd party to retain $3.5M for 4 years (if you could even find someone willing). It's a high enough price that it's not worth paying.

Up to $2M is possible. Anything more than that and you're getting to the point where it makes more sense for them to keep him and buy him out when it becomes a problem they can't ignore.

the point is buyout is a 4M cap hit for nothing in return and TWICE the term. if you don't think johansen is in the buyout zone already then i agree not worth it. once he is, a deal like this makes sense. wild were insane for not dealing suter with retention - makes zero sense.

Doesn't make it any better. He's still RFA when the deal expires, and he's not exactly a cap dump either.

Buyout is $2.67M x 8 years, so not in buyout territory yet, especially not on top of what's already on the books. They can hold off as long as possible if they go that route.
$2M retention for 4 years is better short term and long term. That's the sweet spot. You could probably find a partner for another $1M retention if absolutely necessary, but that would also prevent anyone from retaining on him in the future, so you couldn't move him with 50% retention in his final trade deadline to recoup assets.
