Description
Bring back the kid in Jo Drouin who had fun playing hockey and creating wizardry with his vision.
Outside of that line, Evans as our top checking line, and the other two looking to generate maximum offense.
Kulak we can keep as depth in Laval, assuming he clears waivers.
I think Poehling starts the year in Laval because he’s still waiver exempt, but is up within a month.
Who does Bergevin bring in as our last center?
Dom Ducharme makes it sound as though Bergevin isn’t done.
My money is on either Dvorak or Staal. Think the combo is at least 51% vs. 49% for the field.

6 x 26 walks him to UFA status, it would have to be 7 or 8 years to buy UFA years since 21 + 6 is 27.

We did sign Gallagher to a 6 year deal that brought him to UFA, and we kept him, so there's at least precedent. KK at $4-5M x 6 years is a bit of a risk, but there's potential for it to be a significant bargain as well. I'd rather bridge and then go 8 years, so we are getting those prime years, than go 6 now and pay extra for those prime years down the road.

My worry is with the wingers he will have this season he is likely to really break out and put up 50-70 points easily with the skill and vision he has. A 2 year bridge means your likely going to have to extend him at 7+ after that.

Why the heck wld KK sign for 8 years at 21, that wld just be bad managing on his part. He MAY be inclined to sign the 6x26 that couturier signed and that wld take him to 28 where he cld be a UFA and get another 6-7 year deal. He won't do an 8 yr one mark my words

Neither would Bergevin. It would set a horrible precedent. It’s a bad idea all around.

For the sake of $600k he shouldn't sign for more than 1 year. If he has a breakout season, now you have to lock him and Suzuki up next season with only Chiarot and Kulak coming off the books, and Romanov and Evans as RFA's (who I think are both arbitration eligible).
He's worth at least $2.5M and 2 years just to push his next contract past that.

Again, based on…
What exactly? Use comps.

I'm okay with that. If he's playing well enough to be worth $7M, I consider that a win. Actually drafting, developing, and having one of our top 10 picks reach their potential, is worth every penny.

There's also a flat cap and CBA uncertainty approaching, so we might be able to leverage a more favorable deal with signing bonuses and such.

First compare the ages of Gallagher and Kotkaniemi post their ELCs ending. Then compare what they both accomplished during their ELCs.
Like comparing apples and orangutans.

This two year deal is a precedent for the bridge of every other player coming out of ELC here in the next decade with this core. That is more important to Bergevin than anything that is being discussed in this forum so far. You don’t give 6+ year contracts to unproven 21 year old players.

Based on what comps for KK? The numbers are not in his favour, should be a pretty simple negotiation at close to my numbers, based on actual comps from recent years.

I think Bergevin will be looking at something like 6x$5.75mm for Suzuki.

Although I agree he's not putting impressive numbers, he's still worth more than a basic 1.5M$ contract to me. In comparison, Lehkonen on a 4th line, signed a better contract. We both agree he won't break the bank, but stil...

I have Lehkonen playing on our top checking line with Evans and Gally. More minutes than KK. And also, he’s significant older and more polished. Even a better goal scorer (so far) than KK both in the NHL and in Europe. Lehkonen will have the higher cap hit this season, in my opinion, that’s pretty much a given. 21 year olds don’t break the bank without stats. And KK’s stats don’t work in his favour, at all. Sure, the kid has potential. And if, and when, he lives up to it, he’ll get paid then (just like JEE did this offseason).

Or just don't use bad ones. It took EE 140+ games over 3 seasons to beat KK's first season point total (34 in 79 games).
Dube just got $2.3M and is probably the closest and most recent comp you're going to find.

Compare the last two years before the bridge. Standard practice in both contract negotiations and arbitration hearings. Dube is 23 years old. And his entry level contract slid a year. Wrong age for an appropriate comp. For a 3 year deal though, that cap hit wouldn’t be bad for the team. My guess though is that KK’s agent prefers the 2 year deal I suggested over Dube deal.
