Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 28, 2021
Published: Aug. 28, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I understand that 6.1M is far too much for a player of Kotkaniemi's skill but the difference between him and a 1st+3rd is greater than the amount of problems his cap hit will cause. 2007 was the last offersheet accepted and before that was 1997. It's unlikely Montreal opts to part ways with one of their fan favorites. This move leaves Montreal without a legitimate 2C and with Suzuki as a struggling 1C he needs a strong 2C. It's not realistic that Montreal can flip the 1st in a package for Dvorak or Eichel (or offersheet Beauvillier), NHL GMs understand leverage and will force Montreal to overpay. Matching this contract is not quite as bad as it seems, I don't completely understand the rules of arbitration but if it forces Montreal to pay him $6.1M so be it. The Canadiens may have been aiming to bridge before a large contract like this but if they match I think signing an extension maintaining the AAV until RFA expiring would be wise.

If anyone is an NHL Arbitration expert please explain it to me.

Do you think this puts Carolina in serious cap trouble in coming years?

No it’s a one year deal

But his demand will be this or more for the coming years, and I believe he can take it to arbitration.

This will be his first year as an independent 1C last year Danault eased the role by playing as a mix between a 1C/2C.

Only if the Canes QO him. If he doesn’t play well this season Canes are going to let him walk - that’s the worst case scenario for them bc they’ll be out a first rounder with nothing to show for it next year. But it’s not the worst thing in the world since they’re not locked in long term and they remain flexible from a cap perspective which is their number one priority right now.

It also sounds like they’ve laid groundwork with KK to extend him to a longer deal if MTL doesn’t match at a number under his QO. Which makes sense from his perspective bc at the end of the day he’s getting way more money than he would’ve with MTL and he’s getting a fresh start in a less pressure filled place which could be good for him. He knows if he’s not willing to take less than his QO the team will just let him walk.

They unfortunately did something similar with Ned - they couldn’t come to a number bc they didn’t trust he was a legit starter in this league (thought small sample size in front of a great d was the reason for his success) so instead of risking going to arb they let him go for essentially nothing. KK knows they’ll do the same with him if it comes down to it but his camp is smart to know this is the best financial situation for him even if he signs an extension at a lower AAV then his QO calls for.

I don't completely understand QOs so this was actually very helpful. Thanks for the feedback.
