More so naïve thinking that they had a chance at getting Aho. The decision to offer sheet Aho if you think you can get him isn’t stupid. The stupid part was thinking you can get him.

Obviously Marc Bergevin isn’t petty, and didn’t sign Aho just to screw over the Canes.

Waddell is the most un-readable gm in the NHL

He reminds me of 2-face in the batman universe.

One minute he can have a meh free agency gambling on a bunch of bad apples and injury prone players to...

Signing Svechnikov to a nice team friendly deal...

Then go ahead and screw over another team via offersheet as revenge for the Aho attempt in 2019. But what makes this revenge scary is even if MTL matches they got an even bigger problem next year with Suzuki. As Waddell will have the space and resources to offersheet him for even more money to the point where it could make it very difficult for Bergevin to match

All I got to say rn is Waddell is either drunkenly gambling or galaxy braining this ****.

so.... Staal drops to #4 on the pay grade and Carolina will still have tosign and pay Necas next year after 6.1 this year. I don't know? Maybe Montreal takes the 1st and 3rd and waits???

It's not galaxy-brained at all. They played their offseason in a way that gave them a ton of cap flexibility exactly when every other contending club had none, aka. the August-to-September period. Without that, no way could they have given the full eight to Svech or (especially) do this.

Well obviously Carolina knows the habs will match, so they aren’t worrying about how Kotkaniemi will fit on the team. (Which due to the centres they already have, would be a terrible fit)

Actually, Kotkaniemi is a great fit. Trocheck is likely to get a massive overpayment in free agency next year. Kotkaniemi would then slot in at 2C right next to Necas and Jarvis. As of now, they'll run lines of KK-Trocheck-Necas and Nino-Staal-Fast, then compete for the cup doing so.

Well considering what this contract does to our cap situation, there’s no room for more offer sheets unless the Canes decide to pile on us even more.

No it's not. Trocheck is a very good player. Jeppu can wait his turn. Troch is going to get royally paid from some center-desperate club and he'll walk right into the 2C spot the next season.

I’m not arguing that he should play C ahead of anyone else on Carolina, I’m saying that acquiring him so that he can play wing is incredibly stupid. All you’d be doing is setting back his progress in the NHL.

It won't "set him back". KK has never truly played a top-6 role before. This will be his big opportunity to make his mark on a cup contender.

Now since he has a $6.1 million QO next year, the habs are so screwed cap wise. They need to sign Suzuki and Kotkaniemi for likely $13 million or so combined, with only Ben Chiarot’s contract coming off the books.

But obviously given that the offer sheet happened, it’s a no-brainer to match it for the habs. It’s just unfortunate that our team will be messed up so much because of Bergevin’s naïveté in thinking that the Canes wouldn’t match Aho’s offer sheet.

For Jesperi, this is phenomenal. He’ll likely end up making $7.5 million more or so than he would have over the next 2 years.


The QO only matters if he doesn't sign an extension during the season. Habs could match the 6.1m and resign him during the season for less on an extension.

The Habs can easily turn the tables and let the Canes keep him, if anything the Habs helped the Canes with the below market value deal that Aho got. I'd love to see the Canes have a $6 player who only score at a .40 per game point rate. New worst contract which the Canes would than have to walk away from and allow KK to become an UFA next summer to rejoin the Habs if he desires. All the while the Habs will get a top 20 overall Draft pick.

KK will get destroyed by the media and fans if Bergy matches.

Best bet. Let him walk and take the picks. Let his QO screw over the Canes next season. Let Waddell's revenge boomerang back and smack him in the back of his head.

Then offer sheet Necas.
