2 Questions to anyone who knows about RFAs and OS and QO.

1st. If canes tries to extend KK during season do they have to follow the QO at 6m or can it be lower than 6m (let's say the contract be accepted no matter what if they can hypothetically)

2nd. If they can't, can't they just wait and no give him a QO and try to sign him after that for a lower cap hit. Assuming he likes it in Carolina.

They might negotiate a lower AAV, but that depends on his will. If he is not prone to that, then 6 mil of no qo.

They have a year to convince him and I think they can do it. He knows he won't get 6m elsewhere unless he breaks out. I can guarantee that.

Technically Kotkaniemi could sign for any number in between league minimum and maximum next year. However if he accepts his offer he has $6.1 million guaranteed, so it makes no sense for him to sign for any less than that.
