That’s his QO but they could always sign him for less, let him walk, trade his rights. If he doesn’t pan out losing a first next year sucks but not the worst gamble. They can use that money to extend Troch or find his replacement in a guy like Hertl potentially.

On the Dougie side - it was always about not paying him big money for the last 4-5 years of the contract when he’ll likely fall off big time like most mid 30s big time D tend to.

They have to QO him to sign it. If he knows he’s not gonna get close to that anywhere else and canes are willing to sign him to a 4x4 deal there’s a good chance he considers it at the very least. And if he pops off with a better coaching staff and line mates then canes will be fine giving him a 5x6

Hamilton was always about not getting tied to him for second half of the long term deal. Ned was somebody the staff and front office never trusted. Not saying either of those moves were right but there is rationale there and they stuck to their strategy

Technically yes he can but it all depends if hes ready to bet on himself. If he doesnt show big improvement this year (in a probably very limited role in CAR) hes not gonna get a qo potentially.
