Calgary should retain 375k off Monahan
Quoting: math731
Then, MTL should simply go for Eichel...

I wouldn't be opposed to that

Why would they do that? They are adding a 10M cap player. Buffalo can retain if anything.
I know you cannot show this on one page but Buffalo makes two trades:
Eichel to Calgary for Dube, Monahan, Zary, 2022 first and third.
Buffalo sends Monahan and Miller to Montreal and retains 50% of Monahan's salary for Lehkonen, Struble, and 2022 1st round pick (MTL)
To copy what was in the description:
CGY gets: Jack Eichel
MTL gets: Sean Monahan and Colin Miller
BUF gets: Artturi Lehkonen, Connor Zary, Dillon Dube, Jayden Struble, 2022 1st (MTL), 2023 1st (CGY), 2024 3rd (CGY)
I am unclear if the description is correct or the trades are correct.
My version used the trades to determine the vintage of the picks, the description has different years for the picks.
Calgary is giving up Monahan and Dube from this years team and two futures Zary and a first, to make the team much better next year.
Montreal is giving up Lehkonen and future Struble and a first to the team much better next year.
Buffalo gets future picks, center, LHD, and NHL players Lehkonen and Dube.
If I read the trades, Buffalo gets 4 first round picks this year. This is exactly what Buffalo would want to expedite the rebuild.
EDIT: I fully endorse the Calgary trade, it is what Buffalo wants.
