If they let Smith walk, the trade would probably have looked better. In his defense, he was great alongside Skjei in the 2016-17 playoffs.

Moreover, Gallant was a flop; time will tell if Berggren is any good though!

Gallant is in SJ now to. Berggs will be good.

Are either of those players still looking like NHL players though? IMO Berggren is on the outside looking in.

Berggren still has plenty of time; Gallant was a complete bust though.

No doubt he still has plenty of time, but there's nothing showing us that he can play NHL games.

It was fine at the time b/c Skjei-Smith was an awesome middle pairing for NYR in 2016-17. The contract that Smith got, as well as Berggren panning out, make this trade look worse than it truly was.

Still, I guess you could say that every rental trade is bad if your team doesn't win the Cup?
