The part that confuses me is whether Caroline views themselves as a Cup contender. If they did they ate up $2M to $3.5M more of cap space than they needed to (KK is worth $4M at the MOST). Most Cup contending teams want to add at the trade deadline and if Montreal does not match and Carolina has to pay KK then the Hurricanes are working with that much less money to add an impact player at the trade deadline. I get the part about ticking off the Habs, but is it worth it to possibly prevent improving your Cup-contending team as much as possible at the deadline? I think if Carolina puts Gardiner on teh LTIR they will only have about $2.5M left to play with after KK (rather than $4.5 to $5.5M to play with). Confusing strategy to me.

If the offer sheet was 4 million montreal already would have matched.

ya that has nothing to do with what KK's actual value is though. At this point if carolina resign him based off of what the QO will be then maybe in a couple years he will actually be worth 6-6.5. Maybe they get lucky and can extend him at a lower aav than that but i dont see any reason for KK to do that, he holds all the cards.

Basically Carolina wanted to trade for kk, montreal didnt like the idea or price involved, Carolina forced their hand and apparently has a longer term, smaller aav contract extension on the shelf as a hand shake deal with kk that will be signed in jan when able

I get that part, I just don't know why a "Cup contending team" would try to spend more on a player than he is worth, especially when cap space is so valuable to a team that is close to the cap (like Carolina would be if KK joins them). If a really good player is available to the Hurricanes at the trade deadline and Carolina cannot pursue him because they are paying Kotkaniemi more than he is worth (and the Canes are too close to the cap) then they have directly hindered their Cup chances by being unable to pursue that player just to try to mess with Montreal and Bergevin.

You see, the whole point of offer sheets is that they absolutely inherently have nothing to do with actual value.

There shouldn’t be any confusion here.

This is the equivalent of Carolina's trade deadline acquisition. If it goes through MTL would already get the main asset that we would use at the TDL

I'm not going to bother looking at Canes cap, but if the numbers you mention above are correct, $2.5M in capspace to start the season will allow them to acquire $8M+ player (at least) at the deadline. So it doesn't really hinder their ability to acquire an impact player in season if they want to go that route.

I agree with your explanation. I would try really hard not to trade Guhle. I saw him play with Laval and he looked really good.

Trochek's deal expires after this year. Staal in two.

I think the interest was because Trochek is going to be left to walk (paying $7 million give or take for a 2C of Trochek's age isn't a Dundon move).....

Aho and KK for a decade? That I think is the plan here...... whether smart or not.
