Unless Montreal is retaining more, I dont really see it working for the avs. Rather keep the cap space open with comphers contract at 3.5m vs Drouin at 5m....1.5m next year can go a long way to keeping Bura or paying Kuemper.

I know that both are struggling players. Middle six winger for a 3c should be about a wash. But with too much retention the move doesn't work/make sense for them. Without the small retention it doesn't give they avs much room for flexibility this year. JD has the higher ceiling, and even being under a crunch, ya gotta give a little something.

Having looked at next year and the year after, I do not see the same issues with the cap space. It is a give and take move.

Drouin isn’t struggling he is a complete unknown. His value until he plays again is literally zero. Throw in his contract and if MTL wants to move him right now a late round pick is about what the can expect. That’s why I don’t see MTL moving him until after the season has started and he is actually back on the ice.

10 guys signed, 28.5m in cap space....take on the additional now we are down to 27m. Sign Kuemper to 5-6m, Bura to 5-6m aavs and you are quickly down to 15-17m to sign 10 more guys to have a 22 man roster. starts to get pretty tight if you want to sign anyone else of value to fill out the depth instead of a bunch of 1-2m guys. Plus dont want to get too crazy with MacKinnon contract the following offseason, same as Byram and Jost.

A little more wiggle room next offseason but you can be splashing the cash either

I don't see MTL matching. I agree they most likely don't move JD until the TDL. I see MTL as a seller this year. As nice of a run as last year was for them, I don't think they match up with the divisions going back to normal. IMO JD would greatly benefit from moving out of the media circus of MTL. Astronomical expectations with no basis in reality. (I kid, but only slightly)

Its going to be tight no matter what Joe does. He said it last year... this was as deep as they were going to get and de[th rolls were going to have to get cheaper.

yup, and with having to sign Kuemper or another starter and another back up...the cheap goalie days are pretty much over with.

Thats why I think they need to be mindful of even adding 1-2m in cap space on a player. I like the idea of the move but could make an issue for them depending on how/if guys like newhook, Kaut, bowers on their cheap deals show they can handle their future roles on the roster. If not they have to go spend on them in UFA or in trades.

Living only 15 mins from BEC and getting to see the Eagles on a regular, despite that negative outside view on Bowers and Kaut, both really are on track to getting their shot. Kaut middle 6 and Bowers bottom 6 roll player. Future is tight but bright.
