Habs Fans Being Ridiculous

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens

Description
Montreal has to match the offer sheet, look what happened when we lost Danault without locking KK up! Habs fans are suggesting we do the same thing again, this time not matching the OS then going out to find another top 6C. Do you seriously think other GM's around the league are going to give us a "fair" price in a trade if we let KK walk? No we will have to severely overpay because we are in a position of weakness. Our best course of action is to match the OS and play KK in a position that allows him to increase his value enough that he either resigns for a slightly reduced cap hit, he has enough value to trade at 6.1 Mil QO or we file for arbitration and get his cap reduced to 5.185 Mil on another 1 year deal. Our only other option is to tank the season and hope to get a high draft pick but then we wasted the entire offseason adding wingers and depth D men and now Price and Gally will not be happy because we are going backwards not forward.

Finally common sense. Any offer Mtl would throw at Pettersson Vancouver would match and be pissed off . It would drive up other teams prices and piss off a whole lot of GMs . Even teams who were not affected would take shots at your RFAs seeing there is no respect coming out of MTL.

I just made (and deleted) a similar post asking the question that you basically answered.

I would seem crazy to let him walk would it not? a 1st and a 3rd are find but if CAR is making it to conference final then a 28-32 pick for KK doesn't seem to fit the bill. He is a serious piece to the puzzle at C in Montreal and personally I think it would be a mistake to let him walk.

I keep seeing these threads, "Let KK walk", "Get Eichel" "Dvorak" whatever but IF KK is let to walk then Buffalo is not backing down from Caufield + Romanov + 2 2022 1sts for Eichel, Arizona will want Caufield for Dvorak and any other team will demand Caufield in a deal for their top 6C. Montreal loses all leverage they need to keep KK and hope he has a great season and they can mend the fences or trade him next offseason.

That is the point, teams aren't going to take a fair offer they are going to make us overpay if we let him walk. Right now Arizona wants a 1st + Norlinder\Guhle for Dvorak, now they are going to want Caufield + the higher of the 2022 1sts (Car or Mon)

Thank you!

Bergevin wont get a better return trading the picks than KK.

Bite the bullet and extend KK on a deal with a better AAV or wait one year and trade him for a higher 1st round pick.

I agree, after the initial shock I wanted to explore the scenario where MTL let KK walk and I was fine with that outcome to be honest.

But I'd much rather have MTL match KK because I believe in him as a player, I believe he will one day become a top C and I believed in him as the 2nd Line C this season. If MTL matches this offersheet it's unlikely KK busts out in a huge way but he likely shows enough to warrant an 8 year × $6M extension and that would be worth it for MTL. Yeah it's a loss thanks to Carolina... no doubt about it, but it doesn't have to be a total loss because if the above scenerio happens then MTL will not have to worry about C for the next 8 yrs once they lock him and Suzuki up. All they need to consider is can they lock Suzuki up, and they should be doing that as soon as they have the opportunity, don't let it go to offersheets.

Well said and thought out. Im hoping Habs don’t match as a Canes fan bc I think KK could really thrive in Canes top 6 if he’s deployed and developed properly playing with other high end talent. We’ll soon see tho!

I like KK and haven't been too worried about his offense as he's been improving in other areas.

I don't see how he can survive or reach his potential in the hostile environment this has created.
Like I said, forgiveness might be possible if he at least fires the agent who advised him to sign what was essentially a big middle finger to the organization, but keep him or not, his days are numbered and the fans aren't going to let it slide easily.
Every time he is struggling, he's going to be hounded. When we lose he's going to be blamed. The boo-birds are relentless.

Maybe he can overcome all of that pressure and negativity and become better then we ever hoped, but that's a longshot now imo.

Agreed. While I've come around to the idea of simply keeping him actually does make more sense, his days are probably numbered in MTL now.

They can't trade him for one year but better believe he's being given top 2 mins this season now to shut up and produce and hopefully up his value so that in a years time we can sign him long term and ship him off afterwards.

His only saving grace right now is if he absolutely kills it next year. If that's the case, then good on him for proving all us doubters wrong and i'll gladly eat some crow. Otherwise, sayonara kiddo!
