I'm surprised he only got 400k more than McCabe. Amazing deal.

Just a great signing! He's been our best Dman for a couple years now and literally our #1 RD last year. 4 more years at that cap hit is amazing!

I like the signing, but I'm a little surprised. I thought for sure Murphy would make for some tasty trade bait at the deadline. They could have flipped him for a 1st or 2nd round pick and then open up a roster spot for one of the younger guys.

Starting next season they only have like 5 guys signed…now 6. They’ll also have tons of ELCs and Kane/Toews will be in the last year of their contracts. So next year will be a bit of a tighter squeeze but hopefully by 23-24 season Kane and Toews will be making much less (well Toews will at least) and the cap might go up a bit.

None of the younger guys can fill the role. They’re all projected 3rd pairing or lower. Maybe Beaudin or Mitchell can become 2nd pairing guys but they need more time and experience. It’s a smart move to lock up Murphy during his prime for cheap. Now they have Jones, Murphy and McCabe as their top 3 of 4 Dmen which is pretty solid.

Extremely happy to extend Murphy. Has been the hawks best defenseman the past few seasons and is an under appreciated defensive dman.

McCabe is really good. Defence is not known to persist very well into defensemens 30's. The length is good, but I don't think this deal is as amazing as you suggest. Good though.

These kind of deals for defensemen are absolutely necessarily if you're going to overspend for 8 years on Seth Jones.

Not sure where you learned to count, but the Hawks have 12 players on the current roster that are under contract for next season.

Murphy, McCabe, and De Haan as three of your top four defensemen is a pretty solid base to have, especially for a team that has issues in its own zone. I'm not that high at all on Jones, but even I don't think he'll have another terrible season like last year, so if he can bounce back to even a respectable level of play, Chicago's top four doesn't seem all that terrible, especially for how it's looked over the past few seasons.

For a player like Murphy, this is a reasonable contract. He's not a complete top-pairing dman, but he is still a very important part of the team. He reminds me of a right-handed (albeit slightly worse) Adam Pelech.

Why would they only flip him for a 2nd round pick or even a 1st? That makes no sense. You have a top 3 defensive player on most teams versus a bag of magic beans in a draft.
