Necas OS - is it realistic

Description
After seeing a bunch of Necas OS posts, wanted to see how that would play out for the Habs.

In order for it to be a number that’s even uncomfortable for the canes (over 7.5m on a short term deal) it doesn’t really seem like the Habs could offer that.

I think Canes would match this offer and wouldn’t have to do much in terms of shuffling their roster around next offseason or the following. The Habs to OS this amount would need to dump Drouin and Byron at least and that still might not be enough since you have to replace them with somebody. For Canes not to match it’s probably got to be 10+ and even then they probably still find a way to do it.

I just don’t see it being too realistic and would only cause Caufield to be OS’d the following season with likely a more impactful OS.

Yeah this is a battle Montreal is going to lose if they want to keep fighting it. Caufield, Romanov and Suzuki could all be on the table for them.

Funny thing is that that is pretty much exactly the offer Habs made for Aho. Only term is different...

We've come a long way from a failure OS to actually just making spiteful revenge offers between Canes and Habs.

Shouldn't the Habs and their fans be happy that their 20 point scorer in 56 games got them a first and third? Habs got cap, just sign a couple of competent UFA centres cheap who are still available and just as good KK will be in 21/22.

I can see both sides of it, beyond even the surface level spite which is just funny and good entertainment which is what the nhl needs. As a canes fan I’m hoping they don’t match tho.

Agree that it great entertainment. Regardless of who KK plays for, he is going to under pressure to perform. 20 point guy in 56 games last season, making 6.1m. Gee the fans will be on him if he doesn't perform. And even his teammates might be jealous or his contract or angry at their management for paying this guy 6.1m. Certainly 6.1m could have spend better.
By the way, "vikhodush", I enjoy your comments/thoughts on CapFriendly.

Yeah it won’t be easy if he continues to struggle. He’ll have a nice paycheck so nobody will feel bad for him but the pressure can make or a break certain athletes. That’s partially why I don’t think GMMB matches - the relationship doesn’t seem great leading up to the OS, although nothing that can’t be fixed. However a hockey crazed fan base in Montreal is going to ratchet things up if KK doesn’t get on the right development track, whereas in CAR there will be much less pressure from the fan base and the front office. Just might be good for all parties involved for MTL not to match.

Thank you for the kind words! Likewise smile

Juuuuuuust a bit outside wink

In fairness they could dump some guys and try to make it work but at that number Canes match anyways. You go into 10+ territory and it’s an interesting convo but can the Habs afford to do that either this season or the following when Caufield is due?

I hope the Habs match but knowing how fragile MB's ego is he likely doesn't match just out of spite for KK. Logic says to match though and either KK accepts a new deal before next offseason or he raises his value enough to get traded out of Montreal. The Habs have spent too much time, money and resources on KK to let him walk for next to nothing IMO. They always knew KK was going to be a 3-5 year project now that we are about to see what we have we can not just abandon the plan especially after letting Danault walk.

Oh I’m a canes fan. Just tired of seeing necas OS at 6M so wanted to see what an actual os would look like given their cap structure

Yeah that last part that you mentioned is the hardest for me to figure out from the outside looking in. If you look at the sequence of events it’s as if GMMB had no forward looking plan.

He OS Aho while insulting / pissing off a billionaire owner who is new to the league and very openly talks about how the the old school culture in hockey and front offices is archaic and needs shaking up and he wants to be disruptive. He should’ve known a very reasonable contract offer loaded with signing bonuses wouldn’t do anything but irritate him.

Then he lets Danault walk for what I think seemed like a reasonable amount of money and term. Maybe a tad high but if you don’t trust KK or anybody else for at least the next few seasons potentially seems like a good guy to sign.

And then after letting Danault walk he calls KK out publicly during negotiations and lollygags on getting a deal done with him.

All the while, Dundon has him circled for what he sees as a grievance with the Aho OS and knows that the canes org is very interested in the player given they sent a request. maybe offer wasn’t great but this should’ve triggered a warning with how everything went down in the past - you have a pissed off front office, a clear weakness at center, a player that’s a prime target for an OS (not a star but an underperforming young player with massive potential), and the canes are sniffing around him already.

Maybe I’m misreading how it all played out but from where I stand it shouldn’t take a genius to see how this scenario would unfold. And if you’re the GM of the Habs that’s literally your job haha

normally i'd agree with you but this is the same guy that offersheeted aho at $8.45m. $6m habs offersheet seems totally possible for necas.

Necas agent isn’t dumb enough to sign that tho. He’ll get a bridge around 5-5.5 next year probably. Long term at 6.5-7 if he wants it I’d think.

Canes will try to lock him up to avoid any of this nonsense next year I bet.

Necas is arbitration-eligible, so they'll file for arbitration to take away the offer-sheet threat, and settle before they get there.

(A player awaiting arbitration cannot sign an offer sheet)

that's only for player elected salary arbitration not team elected arbitration.
