Why not? I mean he would prob be a rental for this season, and according to Dan Kingerski, Hertl's value might be similar to what the panthers got for trocheck, and I could argue that this is kind of similar, if not better than the trochecks trade: Tierney is equivalent to Haula, Thomson is a good B prospect who could turn out as a solid top 4 defenceman, and the 2 2nds have better value than Chase Priskie and Eetu Luostarinen.

If it was a sign and trade deal, I would understand that the sens would have to offer more than this

- Tierney has no value to us
- Thompson is okay but not a deal breaker
- 2 2nds are underwhelming for a top-25 center
- Hertl is better than Trocheck, so I would expect a sizably better return as well.

Dan Kingerski is a random Pittsburgh reporter who has a history of spewing out extremely speculative non sense, one look at where Trocheck was when he was traded vs Hertl now would tell you Hertl is worth much more.

Tierney is awful, a rental, and making 3.5M.

If the best piece a GM is getting in a trade for a top 30C is a B-prospect, they would be fired on the spot.

2 2nds aren't close to enough value.

You are also forgetting that Hertl has a 3-team NTC, he probably wouldn't agree to go to Ottawa, and any team he is traded to, will likely already have an extension agreed upon.
