Keeping KK

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 2, 2021
Published: Sep. 2, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What other alternative is there really?

Monahan, Dvorak, Eichel... Teams are going to make us overpay for a top 6 C no matter how good they are. That also assumes that their teams are willing to give them up at this point when training camp is only weeks away.

Drouin? No way in Hell, he is not a center keep him on the wing where he belongs

Draft? Anyone we draft will be 1-3 years away from making an impact.

The only way we can salvage this situation is to bring KK back, that does not mean that we have to keep him past next offseason or anything like that. We have options if we match
1. We try and help KK reach his ceiling and resign him at a much better cap hit.
2. We trade his rights next offseason
3. We send him his QO and if he does not sign it we go to club elected arbitration and ask for 5.185 cap hit (85% of his current salary)
4. We don't qualify KK and go after another FA center Giroux is supposed to be available and is from Quebec and may want to come play for his hometown team.

quite the dilemma indeed, to keep an overpaid third line center or to "Overpay" for a proven first to second line center

The "Overpay" for a proven first or second liner also depends on IF their team considers themselves a playoff team this year or not and they would be willing to move their player. The Pacific is wide open and Calgary could definitely be in the playoffs so I would say that Monahan is out, Arizona is rumoured to want a 1st + top prospect for Dvorak who is more of a 3rd liner than a second and Buffalo wants 4 1sts right now. I don't see many other options out there.

Most likely we have a deal set with Buffalo for Eichel so we can flip peices that we get for Monahan for Eichel with other peices or just send Monahan in a deal for Eichel and let them decide what they want to do with him

Just another reason why matching makes the most sense at this point. I don't think Buffalo wants Monahan in an Eichel trade though, just my opinion but they said they want picks and prospects not older roster players.

Edit** I know Monahan is only 26, I just mean they want someone under 21 or 22.

Sorry, he is from Hearst, Ontario. My bad I was thinking he was from Quebec because he played in the Q.

he said flip the Monahan pieces not the player

but I agree with your analysis and is my exact position. unless your somehow going to acquire Eichel without losing Suzuki (as that would defeat the purpose as your not gaining centre depth) or you acquire hertl who'd have to waive his no trade which likely isn't going to happen, and we get him on an extension again without giving up Suzuki.

keep the now legal adult(USA) centre and see if with top 6 minutes and solid wingers if he can break out. if not you can trade his rights next year, and have more ufa and trade options

Really? You think the flames get him? I think a flames package leans hard on picks, i think the sabres are gonna value the prospects more.

Keep KK for the season...

Resign him before his qualifying offer and trade him full value next summer.

It gives you more time to pull a good deal and it gives you another chip to offer, worth more because of term and AAV certainty.

Worst case scenario, you can still get a higher 1st pick from a bad team.

THAT's asset management.

trading back Domi for way less after only a couple of months would get the Columbus GM fired on the spot.
