MTL keeps KK easy

Created by: Khalenix
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 3, 2021
Published: Sep. 3, 2021
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
PREDICTIONS
- MTL will keep Kotkaniemi and assess his value. He has a year to prove his worth as a 2nd center. If he can get 45-55 points he will be kept by MTL. If not, he will simply be traded in the next offseason when his NMC expires. To me, the risk is worth it and I think he's ready for the next level.
- Kulak will be traded to allow cap compliance.
- Wideman will have a rough camp and start the season in the AHL.
- Josh Brook will have a good camp and start on the 3rd pairing.
- Jake Evans will prove himself as a legitimate 3rd center and play an important defensive role to fill the hole left by Philip Danault.
- Salary cap will go up next season, Weber will retire, Lehkonen and Byron will be moved out, which would allow to sign Suzuki to an elite contract - I predict a 7.5M$ for 8 years.

you do realize if he craps out and does not produce, considering he only got 20 points last season good chance he does not produce, not a chance in hell MTL will get anything close to a 1st and 3rd for him, and there is no chance he signs long term in MTL, he want out of MTL, MTl would be giving up a 1st and 3rd for one year of KK...pretty dumb.

Take the picks move on, MTL not making the playoffs and hope CAR misses too.

So Weber decides to just walk away from $30+ million and retire? What a nice guy.

When did he get a NMC? I don’t think he does, but I could be wrong.

If he retired today, he'd only be walking away from $12 mil. But yes, it's far more likely that he just stay on LTIR.

If the Canadiens decide to pay Kotkaniemi, they can't trade him since the NHL's collective bargaining agreement doesn't allow a team to trade a player for one year after matching an offer sheet.

If he does want out and has a bad attitude, I agree with you, but there is no official information regarding that, only rumors. I think he just signed a good contract, no bad feeling (let's hope)

In CAR there's a ton of centers, I think he's got a better chance to prove himself in MTL than in CAR. :/

Whether he does or stays on the LTIR, he's not on MTL's cap.

And it's not like it has never been seen....

People close to Montreal Canadiens restricted free agent Kotkaniemi, Jesperi predicted that the forward had played his last game for the club following a healthy scratch in the Stanley Cup Final, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

That and obviously there is bad blood on both sides now.

Almost every player that signed an offer sheet in the last 10-15 years was traded within a few years, it's something that teams don't shrug off easily.

It’s actually less than that. He’s on LTIR this year, so this year’s salary is covered. Should he retire at end of season it would be $6 million. He already has over a hundred million plus. He’s good! Lol

All we need to do is waive Byron and Paquette. Brook isn’t NHL-ready, so we should probably keep Kulak & Wideman on the roster.

Hahah, yeah, that was why I put "If he retired today"...But yes, he's definitely made his money. I'm not sure why he'd retire and walk away from anything regardless though-$6 mil is still $6 mil, regardless of what you've made.

I really can't see the league pushing for him to retire anyway-that recapture penalty is way too harmful to go through right now. I get that they were "investigating", and that they were against that type of contract, but right or wrong, big old yikes if they put this back on Nashville.

Yes they can as Byron and/or Weber can go on LTIR right now See quote from CBA section of CapFriendly below

Can LTIR be used in the off-season?

Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

Then KK takes his QO for three straight seasons, and leaves in UFA. Montreal should not match.

I personally agree they shouldn't match the offer, I think CAR played their cards horribly in this OS. But this post is not my personal opinion of what should happen, but rather what I think MTL is about to do. A lot of people keep commenting that MTL have no choice and can't match, but as a matter of fact, they very well can.

But should they? My personal opinion is no.

I’m sure Carolina has a long term deal worked out with him that would be signed early january. They played this awesome.

I think they do too, but I honestly think it was just a petty move for revenge - from a team who won't pay an honest salary to either their coach or the goalie who took them to the playoffs, a major overpay to an unproven player is just a stupid move imo. If MTL don't match, which is what I think they should do, where are they going to play him? 3rd line? They wouldn't pay Nedjelkovic so they traded him, they lost their top defenseman for the same reason, but they're gonna pay that much for a guy who deserves half of that? A healthy scratch in the playoffs because he was unconsistent? This is a ridiculous business decision and might very well bite them back, because these picks are unprotected and in this league you can never guarantee a playoff spot.

I really don't understand people who say this is a smart move when most of the fans (from Montreal to add to it), say :" Yeah take him we'll take the picks", you know you ****ed up. The offer sheet to Aho was much better thought out, it was an honest contract for a great player who now proved he deserves even more. This is just a stupid revenge and I don't see it working out for CAR.

If they have a long term deal at reasonable money set up, this move has major upside. KK still has a ton of potential. Let’s say they’ve got something worked out like six years, 4.5 per. Then thats 33 million over seven years. If he takes the next step, that’s pretty darn good value.

Yes it counts against the cap but you can also add players whose cap hit is equal to the LTIR player so essentially you add a player for free

No thats the LTIR cap relief pool and its not relevant to the situation. Putting players on LTIR doesnt make them not count against the cap and currently matching the OS would still put Montreal above the offseason 10% buffer.

IF it wasn't possible why would all of the pundits and media say it is. It is literally their jobs to know what the options are. Montreal can match and place either Byron or Weber on LTIR to make it work

Yes they are all wrong and you are right, forget that they have invested their entire careers into reporting on hockey related topics and investigating the options clubs have in certain scenarios. Cause you say they are wrong! That just doesn't cut it, the fact I it's all laid out there in the CBA, a team can use LTIR in the offseason to exceed the cap just the same as they can in the regular season and it does not count against the 10% overage.
